Just wondering how good a beaver's nose is and how far a caster mound will draw resident beaver?  I am thinking about hitting an area after the first of the year that has ponds or small lakes.

While we are waiting for Bogs professional opinion, i'll say that I experimented with beaver lure by placing dabs here and there along the shore of a slough and watched from a blind as the guard beaver investigated every dab within a short time.  I would have to conclude their sense of smell is very acute.  Ace

Buckeye,Beavers have a very good smeller.
One thing about ponds and small lakes, the resident populations travel everywhere on the smaller bodies of water,so if they get anywhere near your lure, they will investigate.

I think Tom's right, beavers have a very good whiffer on the front of their face. Air currents travel differently over open water than they do over land, too. If you are talking about "pulling" a beaver over to a location by lure scent, you should consider the air currents and flows also. Visuals are also big in beaver trapping. Beaver seem to be interested in the work of other beavers. A pile of mud on the bank, a slicked up slide trail, a freshly cutoff tree stump near the water...all visuals to a swimming by beaver.
