New .270 winchester 24" factory barrel. Factory loads?
« on: August 17, 2004, 04:03:53 PM »
I have just changed my encore '06 pistol to a .270 rifle.  I bought a factory .270 rifle barrel that is 24" long and has sights on it.  I do not handload.  I have a sightron mil-dot 3 x 9 scope on it and absolutely love the scope.  So far, I have only shot 15 rounds of Federal premium 130 grain Barnes X and 55 of the same brand only in a 150 grain Sierra game king bullet.  I am happy with my purchase, because I have already seen several groups around 1"@100 yards, but the barrel seems almost sporadic in it's bursts of these groups.  The barnes seemed to have about the same precision as the Sierra bullets.  My question is, of you guys and gals that shoot the .270 factory barrels, have you obtained similar results or found a round that works better than the others?  Any of you shooters keep your barrels dirty and find better results in regards to precision?

Can't wait to hear what is said here since I am on the verge of purchasing the 24 inch SS Encore barrel in .270.  After tuneup, hoping to bring in a New Mexico antelope.

I have the SS 24 inch .270.  Shot about 10 different loads through it and had horrible stringing problems and crap groups (2 to 3 inch).  Finally found that leaving the barrel dirty does matter.  Ended up with cheap old federal 130 grain ammo and a dirty barrel shooting 3/4 inch groups from cold start through to hot barrel groups.  Now happy, but much cursing at T/C before I found the load and the trick.  You know it's a hard habit to not clean your toys after you go to the range, but I guess for a two week deer season, it's OK.

Conrad,

When do you clean your rifle?  I have noticed that my encore will not start grouping decently until after 5 shots and doesn't start to get even remotely good until about 20 are through the rifle.  Could you explain the process you use exactly?  Which 130 grainers do you use?  Do you use the .270 for elk and have any recommendations for loads for elk?
