Reloading question
« on: January 17, 2003, 09:59:21 AM »
Anyone here tried the cast bullets from Bear Creek Supply?  They're coated with a "moly" coating so lube is not necessary.  The guy at the store where I bought my Sharps replica recommended them.  I bought a box of 400 gr. flat nose for a try.  The rifle shot nice and the bore cleaned easily with no fouling.

Was thinking of using more of them in the '73 I ordered.

I've been shooting Bear Creek bullets almost exclusively for a few years in CAS.  I found them to be the only bullet I ever used in a 45Colt SAA that did not lead the barrel.  Most cast bullets lead a Colt because the chamber dimensions are still Black Powder, and the barrel is now 451.  The chamber throats are about 457, and the blow-by burns the lead bullet base causing leading.  The Moly bullets don't lead at all.  I use them also in my Uberti Yellowboy in 44-40, with no leading and easy cleaning.  The only problem I have with them is trying to pick them out of the box when reloading cartridges, they are so slippery!  Tried them on the 45-70 with smokeless loads, they worked fine, haven't tried them yet with Black Powder to see how they handle heavy fouling..

Thanks Flint.

I was hoping I wasn't the only one using em.  They shoot clean from my Sharps with smokeless.  I just bought a model 73 Winchester in 45 Colt from Uberti and figured I'd use them.  Thinking of looking into CAS. I live close by the town where they are made so there's always a good supply.

Your right, they are slippery.  Had to chase em across my bench a few times.

Would you use them for hunting?
