SAKO AII ACTION
« on: August 21, 2004, 12:23:59 PM »
I have a Sako AII - medium action - rifle in .243 that is due for rebarrelling, and I have question I have not seen posted anywhere:

Does a Sako AII action have the potential for delivering enough precision to warrant the investment time and money to build a long-range hunting or Hunter Silhouette rifle?

I have no idea what the lock-time might be or if the trigger can be improved or if a decent light-pull trigger can be found for it. Would a second-hand Winchester or Remington short action be a better alternative?

Any information you can provide is welcome in advance. :cb2:

On other sites I have seen quite a few guys talk about building their rifles around Sako actions.  But I dont think you will find them on this site.  Better ck with Benchrest Central or Sniper.

The SAKO actions are fine actions but the integral scope mount base is not a benefit to a BR shooter.  The action would be best suited to a hunting rifle..  The most common BR rifle action made by our major manufacturers would most likely be the Remington M700.  There are scads of accessories made for it and the round action profile lends itself to easy stiffening by sleeving.  It's the easiest to convert to a BR action,,

Thanks!

I really appreciate your comments. Looks like I'll rebarrel the Sako in 7mm-08 with a 24" Magnum sporter contour barrel.

Don't get me wrong the sako is a great action but the remington is just so much easier to work with...  As a kid the rifle I wanted most was a sako vixen, in the then very popular 222 Rem caliber.  I thought the detachable magazine was the greatest thing since sliced bread.. I still haven't bought a sako but have 5 222's!  that is a great action.  Best of luck..
