Scope base for Marlin?

I'm about to mount a scope to my Marlin 444, What receiver mount scope base system do you prefer, Weaver, Twist-lock, other and why?
I want to do it right the first time, so your opinions would be appreciated!

I have used weaver and tally rings on my Marlin guide gun and the cow boy, On the GG i used the tally bases & rings, They are harder to put on
but they are good and strong, on the marlin cow boy i used weaver mounts and rings. Have had good luck with both. The tally set up costs a  little more but they look good and are plenty strong. I used a Burris "twist on" base because it uses four mounting screws instead if three like Redfield and Leupold.  I don't know if the extra screw makes the mount any stronger or not.  I guess it's like wearing a belt AND suspenders...makes me feel better.
I've always had good service from the twist on mounts and rings.  For any other gun I prefer Leupold mounts and rings.  They are strong, durable and don't scratch my scopes.

I used Weaver mounts on my 35 for light weight. I was wondering if I needed a steel set up on the 444. Are the Talley's steel or aluminum? I know the twist lock set up is steel, didn't know about the three screw situation. The Millett set-up I have and might use has four screws. Do you lap the Leupold rings that they don't leave a mark or are they that true from the get go?

The tally bases and rings are steel and very strong, Like i said in my last post, I have them on my marlin 1895- 45-70 guide gun and they will be there until the cows come home, If you have a midway catalog they are listed in the scope section. What i like about them is they look good and are very functional. Don't think you would regret buying them.

Weaver Grand Slam bases work fine on my 1895M.  I have 2 scopes, one with Warne QD rings and one with Leupold QRW's.  Both work equally well.

:grin: This is an old thread but for the past 32 years, I have used Weaver bases and at first used Weaver rings.. Lately I splurge and get Burris Zee Rings.. The cost is low and the 4 screws are plenty to hold the base secure, and I often remove the open sights and put a slug in the rear dovetail and filler screws in the front sight holes.. Generally I use Redfield, Leupold, or Burris scopes and mount them as low as possible.. I think see thru mounts that hold the scope up high are useless as far as accurate shooting of Marlin rifles as the stock is so low.. Maybe I am super lucky, but I have deer hunted for over 40 years and I never had a quality scope fail while hunting and only one or two while shooting at the range..So this reason of having the option of see thru rings in case the scope fails is not something to embrace.. :shock:  cbagman

hi there Savorino, i put a leupold 1.5*5 with Q/R rings on a one piece leupold base on my marlin 45/70g, and it works great!!.....i wanted the option of taking it off for hiking in the mountains in the off season( plinking etc)......i do find the base adds a little extra weight but "oh well"!.........larry
