Super Magnum Shotguns

Anybody have any use for the 11-87 and 870 Super Magnum line of shotguns? In my personal opinion, they would be nice to have...but why put up with elephant gun recoil to...say...kill a 20 lb. turkey? Opinions would be nice. Thanx!

A 3 1/2" slug would be nice for grizzly I guess(?)...my brother uses 2 3/4" #4 shot for turkeys and he has never had one get away from him...I myself like 3 inch #6...to be honest, it's all in the choke.

I guess there are "Turkey Snipers" out there, that wanna kill em out to and including 100 yards :?:

in my entire hunting life i've never felt recoil when bearing down on any game target.  .300 win mag at deer/elk/caribou or 3.5" hevi shot at turkeys.  only recoil issue for me is sighting it in.  Once the scope is on target recoil ceases to be an issue.

Dukkilr, u have a very viable point. Something I guess I never considered. But...why do u want to even consider dealing with excessive recoil period when u don't have to?

I have never seen one either...just making my point...I don't think you need a 3 1/2 for anything...but if someone wants to use a 3 1/2 let em use it...

dukkillr is right about the recoil in the woods though....I never feel it either.

if i'm not going to feel it, what's the downside to more lead?  it may be the difference between a kill at 40 and a kill at 45 or 50.  even if i don't shoot out that far i don't see a downside to the possibility.  and when the discussion is about turkey guns you don't even have to bother with the yearly sight-in.

OMG. K...vm, enlighten me please. Why do you want to deal with 10 gauge recoil? Please...tell me....I'm dying to know  ....why deal with 10 gauge when a 20 will do just as good?

I got a cousin that uses a 10ga. with 3 1/2s, now it "WILL" give your ol' shoulder a knock, he gets his turkey though :)

he also says he never feels the recoil...why does he use it??? I asked him that when he first bought it...he said "I just wanted it."
Good enough answer for me...

The recoil DONT hurt me it is a auto loader if i was scare of the kick i use a 410 i am young and 6 foot 9 inch tall and weigh 380 pds and the recoil i dont worry about it i have killed turkeys with shotguns form 10ga to a 410ga and i had them 10ga choke custom made and other work done to it it is a turkey gun and i have NEVER seen a 12ga pattern better and i know how far i can kill one if he hangs up in a hay field i also got a Ben Super 90 3 inch gun i have it custom for turkey hunting But i use it mostly for crow hunting any more you get a longbeard out in front of you struting and there isnt no recoil when you pull he trigger lol VM

my first turkey gun was my BPS 10 ga and i can honestly say that the recoil is significantly worse with my 3.5" 12ga in a light weight 870 than it was with the 10 ga.  The only reason i changed was because of the weight... i got real sick of carrying that 10 around all day.  3.5" 12 gives almost as much power but is much more portable.

Don't the BPS weigh about 10-11 lbs? I don't blame you for not wanting to pack it around. Weight is the main factor when talking about recoil, regardless of caliber or gauge.

The BPS i think DONT weigh that much because my Rem SP 10ga auto loader dont weigh that much and i dont worry about the weight i carry it all over the hills of the ozarks when the weight gets to me i will go to my wifes youth model BPS 20ga turkey gun and my dad has a 3 1/2 in 12ga in a Ben Super Black eagle and has all the work my 10ga has done to it and the 10ga will still out pattern it i am just a 10ga guy when it comes to turkey hunting and now i use it coyote hunting too i have killed a deer or 2 with it with buckshot and i let my friends use it duck hunting but why i got it was to turkey hunt VM

You know sumtin C-130, the waterfowl deal is probably the only way I could go with a Super Mag. I have considered that time and time again...but....not to sound like a wuss....but I read of a guy killing ducks with a 3" 20 ga. with Hevi-Shot out to 60 yds!    Sounds viable, but then again, why take the chance, right?
