223 loads
« on: August 29, 2004, 04:37:48 PM »
Just picked up a contender in 223 and shot at the range today. Shot  factory win. 55gr. loads about 1.25". I would like to try some handloads; I have some Nosler b-tips in 55gr,but the only powder on hand is imr 4064. Is this a good place to start? Thanks for the help.

IMR 4064 will work but it is a pain to measure. I have tried many powders in the 223 but I have three that I keep going back to. My favorites in order are Benchmark (great velocities and accuracy), bluedot (ok velocity but no recoil with great accuracy) and H4895 (great accuracy but not quite as good velocities as Benchmark).

Benchmark has quickly become my favorite 223 powder as it gives me 3200 fps with .5-.75 in 5 shot groups.

Hey SJF,

How much Blue Dot are you using with the 55 grain bullet in the 223.  I have read about the 12.6 grain loading, but I haven't tried it yet.

I currently use 26.2 grains of WW748 with 55 grain bullets (Hornady SP).  It is deadly accurate, but I want less recoil and noise from my 14" barrel Contender.

My favorite load for bluedot with heavy bullets is 12.5 gr with either 45,50 or 55 gr soft points. Chrono's 2600 fps from my 16"contender with any of these bullets.

But my very most favorite is 13.1 gr of Bluedot under a 40 gr barnes burner. It put 5 shots into .66" with the best 4 going into .196. I have used up to 13.6 gr with 40 gr bullets but 13.1 is my favorite and it just tickles 3000 fps.

Cool part of bluedot is that it recoils about 50% of a full load. It also seems to take about 3 times more shots to heat the barrel. Great load on dog towns but it even drops chucks very well.

love 13.5gr blue dot with 40gr nosler bt's in my 14" contender. amazingly less muzzle blast! should be good for one of those 10"er's.
