i looking for what yall think a good pistol and rifle to use in matches

1. are your hands large or normal size?
2. do you want to go with more authentic type guns
3. Is cost a limiting factor? :grin:

Will you be reloading? 44/40 brass is a bit fragile compaired to 45 Colt but that's your call on that.

Ruger Vaqueros are built like a tank and are larger than the Colts and clones. You can find them on Auctionarms.com or gunbroker.com (add the www. to the front of either) for $750--800 a pair; you'll need two to play.
Ruger also has the Vaquero in .32. My wife Violett Peacock has a set. They are about the same price as the full size RV's but are built on the Single Six (.22 rimfire) frame. Pretty much zero recoil
Both the Colts and clones can break now and then (but then so can the RV's) The prices of the clones are less--Colts are in neighborhood of $1000--1200 and that's for one.
Leather also can be found on the above sites unless you want to take a shot at making your own. Graybeard does have a leather making forum; check the index.
I like my Marlins (not sure they come in 44/40) but my brother Slashwood has a Italian 66. The Henrys, 66's, 73's eject the cartridges right back on top of your hat. Makes it dirty which is what you Alisas might require.

never reloaded in my life just been looking at web sites and picked a number for the guns rifle has to match right and on making my leathers probly not i am a big fella and it would cost about the same i was reading earlier and saw yall talking about a cart? What about clothing i have a hat boots and blue jeans what kind of shirts should i use oh the big end of trail mite you know where it is held

EOT is going to be in New Mexico from April 27--May 1 give or take a day.

As far as shirts, a long sleeved one will do, with or w/o collar. CAS knows that guns, leather and all the rest add up quick so you don't have to worry about too much in the clothing line past boots, hat, jeans and long sleeved shirt. Nice if you have suspenders but not required. NCOWS group is much more concerned about the clothing than is SASS.

Gun Carts are what we use to move all the stuff from stage to stage and car to range. I'll find posts about them and let you know.

Weeeeeeel here's what I did:
1. Ruger Blackhawk (adj sights for ease of sighting) in 45LC.
2. Win 94AE in 45LC and do these mods http://www.time-slice.com/mohave.gambler/favorites/LeverGuns/Winchester94.htm
plus I cut 1/2" off the stock and added a rubber butt pad. Instead of 4 coils off the hammer spring I cut off 7. Also I made plugs for the holes left by the removed cross bolt safety.
3. Norinco '97 shotgun.
4. Clothes--hang out at the Salvation Army/Good Will for them.
5. Cart is a red wagon purchased at Wal Mart for $57. Made cpvc gun hangers and covered them with pipe insulation.
6. Holsters I used a pair I had. If I had to buy them I go to a gun show and get some cheap ones and modify them to work.
7. Shotgun belt I use is a camera strap with the elastic from a belt purchased at the Salvation Army for 50 cents.

If you start reloading and decide on the 45LC try this load:
4gr Tight Group, 200gr lead, and a case full of grits.

Good luck in your cowboy shooting. I've shot competition for years but this has been my 1st year at CAS and found it very enjoyable.

Howdy and welcome!

First thing I want to say (after welcome) is to slow down, you'll get a more harmonious outcome.

There are thousands of guns that will be available to you over the next year or two. It is a rare fella that is shooting the same guns he started off using, tastes and experiences change.

One of the outstanding aspects of the CAS culture is the desire to help out a new shooter. Not just online, but at the matches as well. So find a local club and visit, make yourself known and ask what guns you can try out. I know this sounds wierd. And sometimes a fella can be having a bad day and not take it the right way, but that's rare. If you were down here, I can guarantee that if you call/email before you show, you could try out just about every gun made for CAS.

If you are going to shoot 45s, then check out www.ammodirect.com for a better price on ammo, you will need it until you decide to reload. But if you aren't a frequent shooter, 1000 rounds can last you at least 6 months. I'd suggest a Uberti replica of the Colt for your first gun, if you are going 45s. There are many available, even with the price increases, for under $400, some even under $300, but you'll have to have a good eye to avoid getting stung. CR gave you the best tip: buy from a cowboy looking to change. The guns are usually set up right and the seller is almost always a good pard.

Get good leather, as you can afford it. First, buy a belt that fits you. It's easy to loan a gun and a holster, but if you don't fit my belt, then it's troublesome. Big Ed of SPS (an advertiser here) is having a sale, his work is excellent. There are other choices as well.

Don't worry about clothes or a cart for a while. Just wear a decent cowboy hat and no tennis shoes, you'll be fine. I wrote an article on clothes, I'll see if I can dig it up.
