17 hmr , or 22 mag for first rifle?
« on: August 31, 2004, 02:44:29 PM »
alright, first some background information on myself. I am 16 years old and have been around guns alot. But my father does not hunt nor own a gun. But because I have lots of friends who own guns I am knowlegable on how to shoot and gun safety.
I would like a rifle to shoot with my friend. He owns and 17 hmr and I enjoy shooting it. But Im not sure if a 22 mag would be better sooted for me. I have read this thread- http://www.graybeardoutdoors.com/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=30942 and understand the differences with the rifles. But I still cannot decide. We will be shooting small game and targets. Also I have read about ammo being cheaper for a 22 mag. How much of a price difference is it? And which rifle is cheaper to buy? Thanks alot.

AndyC, The .22 Mag is cheaper to buy. the price of a .22 Mag Sportster at Walmart is $103.62 plus tax(es) and If I am not mistaken the .17 HMR will be about $30 bucks more. The .17 HMR ammo is between $9-$10 bucks per 50 and the .22 Mag is about $7-$8 per 50. I would suggest the .22 Mag for now for you for economic reasons and the fact that with a good shot and careful hunting it is capable of taking up to coyote size game (some might argue this but I do it). I also hunt coyotes with my .17 HMR and hold out much hope for the newly introduced 20 grain ammo from Hornady. If you want to wait a bit and don't want to shoot game as large as coyotes you might look into a new H&R sportster in .17 Mach2, a necked down .22 LR round. It should be great on targets and small game with the ammo about $6 per 50. Still you will not go wrong with a .22 Mag. One more thing, if you did not have to shoot against your buddy and his .17 HMR I would recommend a .22 LR for your first gun, cheap ammo ($1.50-$3 per 50 depending on the load), accurate and a gun you could keep forever. However it is not in the same league at a .22 Mag or .17 HMR, still you could do a lot of shooting for the price difference in the ammo and perfectly capable of taking small game at 50-100 yards with the proper ammo. Remember much is the shooter, not the gun....<><....

i would recommend the 17v marlin. wal-mart has em for $179. put a simmons blazer 6*24*50 scope on it ($69) and a little $1 trigger trick and then shoot with your friend and make him envy. it is more accurate than a 22mag plus u get the bull barrel and it is a lot better gun than the nef.a 22mag bull barrel marlin is $299.ive had alot of guns and this 1 is my jewel right now.i plan on buying a 880sq marlin next .22lr.alot cheaper to shoot. the most fun gun i have is the marlin 7000 22lr automatic gun for plinkin (unbelievably accurate for the price).let us know what u get and how u like it after u shoot it!! happy shootin!!

Andy, check out both the 917V and 917VS Marlins, I have both, the VS is my favorite of the 2, both are great shooters, but the laminated stock is supreme. I have Rifle Basix triggers in both, kinda spendy($80 each) but worth every penny, no creep and set as light as you like, glass smooth and breaks like glass. If you would like a shortened magazine that doesn't stick out as much, Ole Man River at RFC sells em or will modify yours to 5 shot.

If this is your first rifle go with a 22 LR! Ammo is cheaper.

I'd recommend the .17 hmr if you are interested in the best target accuracy, some 22 mags are capable or nearly capable of the same accuracy, but the ammo cost for premium 22mag ammo is going to cost as much if not more than .17hmr ammo, especially since .17hmr ammo costs have come down in the past few months to $7-$8 a box. The best shooting 22mag ammo is $10 a box according to the 22mag shooters at RFC. Sub moa accuracy is normal for .17hmr rifles, and less frequently are 22mags as accurate. With the additional flat shooting capabilities of the .17hmr over the 22mag, the .17hmr is the hands down winner in my book. I've thought about buying a CZ452 FS in 22mag, but I can't justify it for any other reason than I like the rifle, not the caliber, it's a nice looking full stock model. The 22mag just doesn't offer anything over the .17hmr, especially now that hornady and CCI offer 20gr game bullets for hardier critters. Testing at RFC has shown the 20gr bullets offer great penetration compared to 40gr 22mag loads which are notoriously inaccurate compared to the .17hmr, the best accuracy being with the 30gr and 33gr 22mag loads.

The Marlin 917V is $180, the 917VS $280. If you want to spend less, get an NEF Sportster, a very good shooting single shot rifle. They can be had for as little as $120-$150 and you have the option of adding additional barrels for different calibers thru the accessory barrel offer from H&R1871.

AndyC, The Marlins are fine guns, I really like to looks of the Laminated stock one pictured above, and with the addittion of a flush fitting 5 round magazine it would be a beauty. However if you are a beginning or fairly new shooter I suggest saving your money and getting a H&R1871 (New England Firearms) Sportster single shot. Since your buddy already shoots a .17 HMR and you might be hunting fox but not coyote go with the .17 HMR. Don't be fooled into thinking money alone will buy accuracy. I have shot my .17 HMR Sportster (under $150) with  a Simmons Whitetail Classic 6.5-20x50 ($100), a $250.00 set up head to head against an Anshutz 1717D ($1,450.00)with a Unertel scope ($800), the Anshutz, set up the way it was cost 9-10 times what my H&R did and I equaled or bested the groups of the Anshutz at every yardage!!! The H&R won overall!!!. I shot the Anshutz after the little informal match and of course the Anshutz's owner just had to shoot the gun that beat his pride and joy. I must admit the Anshutz's trigger was to dream of and the scope was spectacular, the gun itself is a work or art (Mastergrade, special wood) but the H&R came out on top. Try the H&R in .17 HMR to get your feet wet, if you want to move up to something more expensive and a bit more flashy by all means do so. You will always have the H&R to fall back on or to let another friend shoot so you can get another introduced to the shooting sports. Try it, it won't cost much and I think you will like it, but be careful, they are addictive. If you run into any other questions or problems please visit the rest of us Handi/Sportster junkies just a bit above this section. Remember, accuracy is as much in the shooter as in the gun....<><....

Thanks alot for all the help guys! I really feel welcome here!

Now for the harder question, that I might have brought up first. Im not quite sure how my father is going to take to my owning of a rifle(we have no firearms in my house, only paintball guns) Im trying to find out all of the information I need, so I can present all the data to my father in an orginized way and so I can answer all questions he has. What facts should I have ready? What kind of safety procautions can I take to make sure nothing bad happens? Thanks alot.

For starters take and pass a usually free state sponsored and accepted Firearms or Hunter Safety course. Perhaps ask your Dad if he would be willing or interested in taking the course with you. I am sure if you took the course, especially if you took it together it would go a long way towards his acceptance of your owning and shooting a firearm. And it would also help insure your safe handling of whichever firearm you do decide on getting. Remember, a Hunter Safety Course is to teach you how to handle and be around firearms safely in the field, on the range, and at home, not to teach you how to hunt....<><....

Ive also been looking at this rifle- http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/boltAction22/981T.htm
How would it serve for hunting small game? Would it be better sence it can use 22 short , long, and long rifle ammo? Thanks
