Bullet question for T/C New Englander
« on: February 11, 2003, 04:16:57 PM »
I hunted this past season with a new (for me) bullet, the powerbelt 295 gr HP for my .50 cal T/C. Until this year I had used various T/C bullets, maxi-hunter, maxi-ball, etc. The powerbelt shot much better than anything I had tried previously, but I am still looking for something better :) I reload .44 mag for my Ruger SRH, my question is this. Can I use the 240 gr XTP HP bullet for my .44mag to shoot with my .50 cal T/C (with sabot)?
I have never used a sabot/bullet combo except for the powerbelt that has the sabot attached. Any thoughts or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
This is the first post I've made on this forum, but I've REALLY enjoyed reading all the different topics. This place is great!

I have used theT/C's XTP 240 gran 45 cal.bullet w/ sabot for 50 cal.  Works quite well.  Check out Cecil Epps site "Precision Rifle".  He offers his own custom bullets (polymer tipped) and sabot combinations along with allot of very good info.  Cabela's also sells his bullets as well.

The XTP Bullets work great!  I personally use 200gr. 44 bullets in my 50cal with 100gr. 777 and never had a deer go more than 20-30yds. The 240's also work well, it just depends on what your rifle will shoot most accurately.
I like blowin' big holes in stuff...

JUST A THOUGHT; BUT CHECK YOUR RATE OF TWIST TO MAKE SURE YOU CAN SHOOT SABOTS WITH IT. LUCK AND 10X'S

Before I got my 209X50 I used a New Englander with 90 grains pyrodex and the TC Breakaway Sabot with 240 grain XTP
Accuracy was under 1.5" at 75 yards. Couldn't get the Breakaways to work in the 209X50  but I am getting good results with the Mag Sabot with 240 XTP and 777.

Good Luck
Bob

WARPhEAGLE You probably won't get the accuracy you have been getting using the saboted bullets. The reason I say this is due to the fact that New Englanders have the 1 in 48 twist. This twist isn't fast enough to stablize the saboted bullet. You need a faster twist such as the 1:32 or 1:28.
