Powder names XMR maker?
« on: August 28, 2004, 09:39:11 AM »
Considering I've handloaded since the 70's I'm almost embarrassed to ask this.  But I can't keep up with all the new powder names.

I see some newer manuals listing XMR powders - who is the maker / label on the containers?  Specifically is XMR 3100 different from AA 3100?

Figured careful is better than pride.

The powder is manufactured by Accurate Arms. It is the same as AA-3100.

I believe that they first designated it "XMR" to differentiate it from "IMR".

I thought the XMR was a generic to describe the powders with the same numbering, instead of writing IMR-4350, H-4350, and AA-4350 they could just write XMR-4350 to talk about all three of them at the same time. I don’t know I’m just guessing here but that’s how I took it. Anyone else like to chime in here?

XMR and XMP were Accurate Powder designations that have been dropped, same powder, just shortened names

thanks Steve R and Butler - So l can likely use my AA 3100 when a manual lists XMR 3100?  Guess I should contact AA.

Just want to be sure.

Donna -thanks but with all due respect,  I don't think your suggestion is correct, especially for the 4831 type powders.  Old (WW2 Surplus) H4831 was significantly different from new (mid 80's ??) H 4831 and there were many announcements to that effect.  Then when IMR 4831 came out, it was found to be significantly faster than H 4831 - also well pubilicized.  And I've found this to be so in my 300 win mag.  Hence my caution with using my AA 3100 where my new Barnes manual lists XMR 3100.

From my reading it seems like the 4350s might be a little more similar to each other - but I would hesitate to chance it.

Even more confusing, I believe Hodgdon says their current H 4831 and H 4831 SC (short cut)  ARE interchangeable.

I am open to corrections here - wanted to post some of this in case others area but uncertain like me.
