Any recommendations for loading for a bolt 30/30. It will be used for my son to hunt whitetail this fall. I would like to use the Horndy 130 GR SP Pistol bullet.

I have been loading for a Savage bolt action for a long time now, and have found the 125-130g bullets work ok. My wife uses them most of the time, but I like the 150's better. Her load is 125g Rem PSP, Dominion cases, Win primer and 37.5g of H335, for a velosity of 2560 fps. I went as far as 38.5g and got a velosity of 2650-2700, with no preasure signs, but the group opend up. One thing I have found with the .30-30, is the brass varies a lot in weight, and thus effects velosity and preasure a lot. I have shot a few coyotes, and my wife quite a few whitetails with the Remington 125g psp, but I think the 150g bullets traveling at 2400 fps will give better performance on a tougher shot. What OAL did you load to for the 130 and 150 grain loads?

I just started working up loads for a Sears (Savage 340) that I bought used for my grandson. I've heard that the 130 gr. Hornady works well at 30-30 velocities. I'm trying the 130 as well as 150. I worked up loads with H 335 but havn't tested them yet. Of course you're aware that you can use spitzer point bullets and overall length can be longer, but you have to make sure that they can feed through the magazine. When I get these loads tested, I'll let you know how I made out. The initial overall length I used was the factory length until I check out the feeding.

I've loaded up a bunch with 125 gr. Sierra pro hunters in my son's model 340, using H335. The OAL was limited only by the magazine.

I tried out those 130 gr Hornady pistol sp in an older Sears (savage 340) rifle today and they fired fairly. Worked load up to max and no problems. Grouping wasn't bad, I bought this rifle used from a friend for $100 and this was the first that I shot it. OAL was the same as factory ammo and from the looks of the clip, I don't think I could seat the bullet out much farther.

Thanks for the recommendations. I think I just solved my problem with my 7-30 loads for my G2, tomorrow I will begin loading for my sons' 30/30. I really enjoy this new hobby!!!!
