Going to Alaska on the 27th for Caribou. (BACK FROM HUNT) :)
« on: August 26, 2004, 09:25:20 AM »
I just want to let you all know I will be going to Alaska on the 27th of August and will return on the 9th of September. Going after Caribou and Wolf. You all hold the Fort down for me OK.  :D

We did not use an outfitter, we did a self guided hunt. We flew out of Brooks Range Aviation to the Northern sloop by the Nigu river basin in the artic circle. All three of us were successful with 3 very nice bulls. 2 bulls were taken on the 3rd day and one one the fourth. Unfortunately I did not use my muzzleloader. I was using my Tikka 300 Win mag. My shot was at 300 yards, one shot through the lungs. Very clean kill. All shots were over 200 yards. We seen well over 800 Caribou. We had a Grizzly come within 200 yards of camp    and had wolf tracks in camp almost every night. It was a very hard and tiering hunt, but well worth it.    I was the only one that did not get pictures of my Caribou. We left camp unprepared and forgot the cameras and by the time I shot the Caribou and crossed the river to get to it, we did not have time to go back to camp almost a mile away before we had no light. All the meat has to be removed before the hide and horns and we wanted to take it all out before any bears or wolf would get to it.

While I was there I said I would not do it again. But now that I am back, I would do it again. I learned a lot while I was out there. The guy that took  my buddy and I, did not prepare us well for the area we hunted.    But we made it and had a great time.
