OK fellas...pop quiz (not :grin: :wink: ). In my state of PA you can only use in-lines in one of the two season of the year. Now...I don't know about the rest of you (and those who are probably lucky enough). But suppose you don't get a deer in that first season and all you have is an in-line? Do you guys have Hawkens (or other flintlocks) too? I'm just sticking with a Hawken b/c I don't think it's worth the money to buy an in-line I can only use once a year (for deer, anyway...imagine what a .50 Powerbelt would do to a squirrel :twisted: ). Sorry, I take that back. You can use it twice a year if you are willing to use it during the general firearms season....so make that buy a muzzleloader to use 2/3 possible seasons/year? Thanks guys!

You guys back east with all the deer that practically qualify as pests are pretty lucky to have so many options. We are lucky if we even get drawn for a hunt and when we are so lucky the hunt is usually five days max and thats it for the season. The one thing we can do however is use a modern style muzzleloader. Only restrictions are single barrel, load from the front and only use BP or equivalent (rules out the Savage unless using BP). We can use scopes and since we only have a limited chance we (or at least I) use all the best I can collect legally. I shoot an Omega with a 1.5-5 scope and synthetic BP (mostly 777) and the bullet is usually a Powerbelt or Hornady SST. My brother hunts NY and PA and I think his legal limit for deer is four or five (somehow I lost count). I got one Elk last year and hope to get one this year. Getting drawn twice in a row is really lucky.

Pests, eh? Take your pest anger out on Kerry, huh? I just wanted an answer to the question if any other state than PA limited you to old style flintlocks and not modern muzzleloaders. Next time, don't bother. Maybe you were joking with that "pest" remark, and I'm sorry to say your state is so strict in hunt drawings. And we don't have that many deer. Even tho I saw 3 tonite when I went scouting, I only saw one deer during the season last year and I took him (8 point buck). And even if there were so many deer, we can only apply for so many tags before our boxes are closed. We're always allowed a buck tag, but doe tags are separate and numbered. If you don't keep up on it, NO DOE FOR YOU!!

Wasn't trying to be a smart---; I guess I suspected you might be from the north western PA border. My brother is in Wellsville NY and the deer are pretty plentiful. He has a back yard that almost always has one or two walking through. I wish I could hunt with him as deer in Arizona are scarce and even though the Mule deer are larger they do not have the same taste as the NY whitetails. I have a better chance getting meat if I put in for Elk rather than deer. As a cancer surviver I only eat meat that has not been corrupted with pesticides and hormones. That limits me to expensive organic meat or wild game. I prefer the latter. Sorry if I ruffled your feathers; didn't mean to. I don't have a flintlock or sidelock (yet) but I sure would like to try that when I get the time.

Well, after later pondering, I thought maybe you were calling the deer pests :twisted: . Sometimes they are...corn and alfalfa fields are their targets. But...u kno....I don't kno if u've ever shot a sidelock (more so a flintlock)...but it's fun...you should give it a try. I'll sell ya my CVA Silver Trophy Hunter for $100

answering your challenge - yes I have both, inlines and sidelocks.

I actuallity I use the inlines for about 2/3rds of the hunting season because I use it during the regular season also, a fast twist TC Hawken during ML season and a TC Renegade or a Trade Rifle during primative season....
