Swede 96 stock disk question
« on: September 05, 2004, 06:10:33 AM »
Saturday I purchased an original CG M96. All numbers match ( I haven't had the stock off to check that one ) The bore is pristine the only catch is that it's missing the brass stock disk,  Does anyone have one or can someone point me to a source?  It's sort of looking at a pretty girl with a missing front tooth.......Thanks for any help        Essex County

Call  Samco Global Arms they have a new stock disc and screw to put it on too.  If i remember correctly its $10 plus shipping and if your missing a cleaning rod they have them too at the sametime.           BigBill

I have looked into number #1 bores, into number #2 bores and into #3 bores its a rust in the bore rating and i can't see any rust at all and i can't see the difference they all look the same to me "GOOD"!!  They sure shoot good too.  I have some swede's with no number rated too so its a great bore with no rust? The disc looks orginal too tarnished.

If you ever take it apart to check the stock(serial number in the wood) check the handguard too both wood pieces were numbered to the gun.  I have one swede that is completely numbered does it matter to some it may.  If the bolt is numbered to the reciever and she can shoot straight thats all that matters to me everything else that is numbered to the gun is a plus like icing on the cake.

The numerals on the stock disc disclose the condition and size of the bore, and other info that I don't recall.  Putting a new disc on a rifle will be like putting a new speedometer on a car.  But then, I've done that too.

I think the swede's were too fussy with their rating system one of my M96's is rated #3 and shoots so good a blank disc with no lesser down  rating would be ok.  I'm sure with time it will dull and blend in on the stock.

I'll call SAMCO today.....The gun is  a little dirty, but close examination shows that  none of the screws have ever monkeyed with.  I hate to pull her apart if I don't have to. Do you know a site That could give me some insight into how to clean stock, etc?  I want to use this as a 100yd shooter off a bench. I'm sort of a somewhat functional paraplegic ( I can walk  from  my rig to the bench, but that's about it )  I'm going to HAVE to do something sights as my 58 year old eyes won't do it any more.  Can you suggest a forward scope mounting that won't alter what I've got?  Years ago I never met a mil-surp I didn't want to chop and channel but times and avalibility have changed dramaticly.    Thank's Essex

Most of the time I disassemble the stock from the reciever but  you could wash the stock with Murphy's Wood Soap straight out of the bottle with no water mix and let its soak and some oil will come out of the stock.  I've done a few washings like this then just wipe it dry with a towel I don't like to water rinse because it may ruin the stock.  Just wipe it down and let it sit for a few days.  Then i try to match the color with minwax oil stain then a few coats of tung oil to finish it.    :D                     BigBill

You may have to search for a scout mount to mount the scope on the rear site I think thats what your looking for.

Essex County,
I believe you'll want to get the stock off to do a good job of cleaning your Swede. If you want I can walk you through the tear-down or go to <surplusrifle.com> and you can follow a detailed series of photographs of the tear down and cleaning procedure including the bolt disassembly.  Most of the cleaning can be done easier and better when you tear it down completely.  Cleaning a stock I've done with stong detergent and hot water or oven cleaner also works well using steel wool to scrub with.  The Swedes usually aren't loaded with allot of oil and cosmoline so you can do it!!!

Now, If this M96 has never had the front sight changed, you will find it is zeroed in for about 250 yds. with the battle sights.  I would recommend that you buy the MOJO sight set and give your eyes  break (peep sights fore and aft).
