S.W. PA. was great hunting !!!!
« on: August 10, 2004, 02:19:52 AM »
spent 4 days hunting groundhogs in SW Pa. last week..The really hilly terain was just a rifle shooters dream come true..We found some nice farms & welcoming landowners in your great state...Feez Asked me to drop him a line if the timing would work out..Sorry I didn't get to you ..the drive home was 10 1/2 hours for us up to where I live in Ct...but I have to get back to Pa a few times before this year is over...Wilkes barre is about 3.5 to 4 hours out for me..Any of you guys want to try to get together for a varmint safari in that area of Pa ?? I had more fun than I can type about..I can't belive it has been almost 25 years since I hunted chucks in Pa..Without a doubt the best place I have ever been for chuck hunting..We missed plenty of them at every range from 200 to 600 yds..The 1/4 mile & beyond shots ruined my average...My best shot was about 320 yds..John got 6 with his scoped 44 mag pistol..between us we shot 20 in 4 outings & the first two days were just short late afternoon hunts near pittsburg...It was really hot & humid..Wens afternoon we got a big rainstorm & afterward the hogs went nuts..A farmer took us to his benchrest on top of one hill to shoot down & across to 4 fields range 270 to 600 plus yds...That hour & half killed my average..We got 30 shots & killed two chucks (my best was 320) from up there..I didn't feel too bad after watching the guy who took us up there miss twice...He said we were doing better than most guys..He (Frank) has shot all the easy ones from up there. The rain earlier in the day made seeing bullet strikes impossible (no dust). The steep terain prevents anyone from getting a shot from below so that far off back corner was full of hogs..We saw at least 4 differant ones from our vantage point ..In just the back corner of that one hay lot..On the two closer fields & the hillside facing us there were maybe 5 more ...2 of which are no longer with us..My buddy john is tuning up his 7 MM mag & is going back up there. At home that night we took out the Sierra bullet manual With my gun & load (22-250 & 55 gr smp) past 400yds the bullet drops 35 to 45 inches wind drift almost as much !! & we had wind after that strom !! Still great sport & a Great spot..but the whole state is great for chuck hunting..mike in ct

Ain't it so cool when you find a hot spot?  Glad to hear you had fun.

'The whole state isn't that good.  I have to travel an hour or more to find the good spots.  I had to throw that in so that everybody in the country doesn't come and kill them all.  If everybody finds out how much fun we have there might be florescent orange popping around just like deer season. :)

Varmint safari in Wilkes Barre sounds like a plan, count me in.

hey feez I put the proviso in there..after the rain ...& in one spot the hogs went nuts...I only shot one really big old one...the rest were normal size so somebody has been whacking at them...We did not even see another hunter all week..But somebody shoots them for sure..Most of the places we went were no longer working dairy operations..cutting of hay mostly was for local sale or use with boarded horses...I hated driving out of those hills...It was a long ride home..I can't wait to get back..Ct is no place for people who love to hunt with rifles...I'm working on a homemade rangefinder to take back there...I'll keep you posted but we need to trade e-mails...mike in ct

I lived in Ligonier PA from 1990-1992 and had great chuck hunting 5 min from the house.

No chucks to speak of out here in IL.  I have a Savage 110FP 223 collecting dust in my safe.

It is only 3 hours drive to the NE corner of pa for me from Ct.I-84 east of Scranton ??.I bought the license $101.00...If I can find some decent fields to shoot over just a bit closer to home it is well worth the drive..can any of you guys point me to some towns up there in the NE corner worth driving thru?? Send me a PM if it is something you want not to advertise...I'd appreciate a few leads closer to home...mike in ct
