single shot hunting

Ihave a encore 50 cal.and love itbut a little unsure to try rifle barrel because may need a fast follow up shot .Your thoughts on this ,thanks.

I wouldn't hesitate to hunt single-shot!

I believe that it will make you a better shot and is likely to make you a better hunter too!

As the old saying goes, "it's the first shot that counts"!  I agree!

If you can't do it with one shot then you shouldnt do it at all.

It is never a good thing to send a lot of lead in the woods (known as spray and pray)  trying to kill something. You may kill something you didn;t intend to.

Once you go for the "one-shot" ......you may never go back.  Even after saying that.....I can reload ALMOST as fast with my Encore as I could ever using a bolt gun.  Just make "THE" shot count and enjoy.

Billy,  i say go for it!! The same question used to bother me as well but the encores come to the shoulder and on target quickly and are very accurate. I've also decided that with a little practice a hunter can reload the encore for a fast followup shot, not as quick as a bolt action but almost. To me an encore is easier to clean and carry as well. Over time my confidence in the encore is that it will kill the game on the first shot! I shoot the 209X50, 7mm08 rifle and 44mag pistol.

Billy, If I understand correctly you have and I presume hunt with the .50 cal barrel. If that is the case then why worry about a rifle barrel. As the others have said just make the first shot count, but if the need comes up for a second shot you can sure reload the rifle barrel a lot faster than the muzzleloader barrel.

Hi Billy,
I cant' add much, to what already been said. I just wanted to say, I've been hunting with singleshots for over 30 years. And never really felt a logical need for anything else. Granted, when I  was younger I had a SS .22, and my buddies were using repeaters, I felt somewhat lacking. But I killed as much game as they did, with a whole lot less ammo!!
Patience, is the key. As with any firearm, wait for the "ethical" opprituninity, and make a accurate, clean shot. A follow-up, shouldn't be needed. Only when hunting "dangerous game", would I think twice, about not using a singleshot. And even then, because I don't feel handicapped and, that I'm more comfortable and familiar with a SS, that's what I would prefer too use.

If go into the woods thinking you need a second shot, you need to practice shooting some more. :wink:  Hunting with a single shot is a mind set, that is the first shot will be good enough.


Now if you got two or more coyotes coming in you might want to be a fast reloader.  :grin:

Billy, a lot of us most  likely had some concerns about going with one shot at first. For me it wasn't so bad because I had bow hunted for years before picking up the contender. I am thinking on starting my grandkids with a single shot or limiting them on how meny rounds they can put in their gun. As has been said it will make you a better hunter because you will learn to wait for the good shots.
