30-30 silvertips
« on: September 03, 2004, 05:41:12 PM »
I read on some of the forums of people loading their 30-30s with Win. silvertips. Where are you finding them? I have been looking all over for  some 170gr silvertips. I even contacted Winchester and was told they were only making them for the factory loaded sells. Anybody know anything about this????? :(

If you cannot find them you may want to consider trying Nosler Partition bullets in 170 gr. Had great success with that load back when I used a 30-30.

Good luck.

I only hunt deer.   I always seem to use the cheap bullets put out by Rem. and Win. I can purchase 500 of them for the price of 100 Nosler partition bullets. I have heard a lot about the partition bullets. But somehow I doubt my little deer around here would know the difference. I guess if I was planning on hunting elk I would think about it. But then I know an old dude who dropped a really nice spike elk a couple years ago using El Cheapo 170's... I really would like to try them someday. I just have to be able to justify the expense of using them when the cheaper bullets seem to work just fine around here. Thanks for the help though!

:-D The only silvertips I loaded were 150 grain Win Silvertip spitzers. The length was too long to eject unfired and was a two shot deal- one in chamber and one in magazine. I prefer the Speer flat nose bullets. Only a little lead showing at the tip. They shoot well and are cheap.. As far as buying silvertips, they can be found on Ebay and bring a premium.. cbagman
