I'm already looking into a boat for next spring or should I say an item to burn my next tax return with! I'm completely new to boat buying and a real novice with boats in general, so I figured I'd ask you folks for some advice. I'll be catfishing (R&R,limbline,jugging and trotlines) and I'll also want to be able to get up in the sloughs and stumpy creek outlets for bream and probly some spring crappie fishing. I'll also have a guest or my two boys going along. I think I may  need a flat bottom aluminum boat because of the need for shallow water work but I'm not sure. I will be river fishing mostly except for the occasional bream lake. I'm not looking for a specific model but more of a general length, shape and material that will serve my needs. Likely I will find an older used boat under $1500 that matches the desription I need and fix it up a little.
Hope I gave all the necassary info for you guys to put your heads together with and help me out. If not I will explain a little more betterer :grin:

yu will definitely want a heavy aluminum boat. seems like the older they are the heavier the hull is. i had a old 65 model blue star 16 ft semi v and it was tuff as heck. you could run good speed up on a gravel bank and never hurt it. it was also low enough to the water for ease of cheking trotlines and jugs. when my kids got big enuf to go fishing with me i sold it and got a 66 model 18 ft alum fish and ski which i totally remodeled inside and changed to a fishing boat. it was deeper and wider which i liked for safety and comfort for the runts. one thing i will tell ya, get a older boat in the configuration yu like but get a newer model motor as they are easier to work on and find parts for and much more fuel efficeint. nothing is more maddening than being out with the kids and haveing to fiddle roun trying to get a antique boat motor to run for ya.

I would recommend at least a 1448 jon boat, larger if you can find one, and you might want to consider a jet drive on the motor.
