who would use there single shot for elk????
« on: June 19, 2004, 02:16:27 PM »
i read in a old GUNS mag that a ss(single shot) should stay in the gun vult and the elk woods is the place for a bolt-gun. i don't know about you but i would'nt hesitate to take a handi-rifle in .280 or a t/c encore in .300 mag or any other #1's and mod 10's with a synthetic stock for elk. i don' know any elk that would stand around for more than one shot ant way. if there is one he would stay long enough to reload and take another shot, find a rest, spend 5 minutes to figuer ballistics&wndage and drop him in his tracks
later :D buckslayer
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

What a load of fertilizer that statement is.  The only time a person really NEEDS a quick follow up shot is hunting game that can bite back.  Sorry Elk doesn’t qualify unless you count the possible heart attack you may get trying to drag one out of the woods.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

I would use a single shot.  I hunt with Encore & Contender pistols, Encore Rifles and Encore Muzzleloaders. I also hunt with a Shiloh Sharps with black powder cartridges. People are taking Elk all the time with muzzleloaders and single shots. To make a statement like single shot guns should stay in the gun vult makes no sense. I was taught, your first shot should always count. Make it a good one and you won't have to worry about a quick follow up shot. Also I can load a cartridge in a single shot real quick. :)

I use a Ruger#1 in 300 Win Mag; more than enough gun, & no 2nd shot required.

Haven't read one of thoes things in almost a couple of decades.  Depending upon the draw results if lucky enough I hope to use either a muzzleloader if drawn for that hunt, or 15" Encore 30/06 if drawn for the general hunt.

Lawdog is right about the heart attack, it's a lot of work to pack out and care for all that meat, hide and rack.

I do`nt feel its so much a matter of the hunted but more a matter of the hunter. One good shot will kill anything in the woods.
People seem to forget that in this nations infancy ALL rifles were single shot. Had they not been capable  there would not have been a settled America today. Hell yes I`d hunt elk with a single shot. Archers bag them don`t they? POW

One shot is all your going to get.  Anything left in the magazine is just there to make you "feel good".

buckslayer,
I found it best to not believe everything I read :-) ! I have used a B-78 in .45-70 on elk since 1991, with complete satisfaction, and have never needed shot #2. Come to think, I never needed a 2nd shot when using my '06 or .358 Win. either . JDL

Guess I should have read that before I made the mistake of taking my old single shots out, and actually taking game with them!
Not only do I hunt with a single shot, but I hunt with a 100+ year old single shot! Still takes the game with ease, and since I drew my mule deer, and elk tags this year, I'll be doing so again! This year for elk I'll be hunting with my Remington Hepburn, chambered in .45-70, with 30" full octagon barrel.
For mule deer it will be my Marlin Ballard #4 Perfection, also chambered in .45-70, with 34" half octagon barrel.
Hope to bring home something with either one, or both!
Ballard, the great American Rifles!

In 1980 I took my first elk with my ruger #1 338 Win in 2000 I took my first AK.brown bear with the same rifle now rechambered to 338\378 Weatherby. for the last 2 years I have been doing all of my hunting except brown bear with a 280 AI. in an H&R Synthetic handi rifle. the freezer is still close to full of wild game meat.

With proper shot placement every thing will die with just one shot.  If you have to have several shots to back up the first one IMHO you need a little more time at the range.

I hunt everything with my drilling, and i've taken bear, moose, deer ect.. with it.  I really have no idea what so many these days have to have several rounds in a magazine to be comfortable hunting with there firearm!!

I've used mine for moose, sheep, caribou, bear, deer, wolves, and a few other things.  Don't see why I wouldn't use it on an Elk.

I've used Ruger No 1 .375 H&H for elk.  It seemed adequate.  However, I must admit my favorites are .358 Win (lever) and .35 Whelen (bolt).

Yukon Jack,
Say Jack, You left out the dreaded Alaskan Snow snake. Them buggers are tough and mean, They prey on fellers from the lower forty eight.

Back to the topic, I see no difference hunting with a single shot rifle, They all do the same thing, You don't have as many parts to mess up, I'd say you would do as well with a single as you would with any Rifle.

Hi All,

This is my first post on this forum. I hope I do this right!

I have a few single shots and have taken some deer with them and have never felt like I needed more than one shot. I choose my shots carefully and don't try head or neck shots.

I have a T/C Contender in 30/30 AI, Savage 24 in 30-30/12ga., NEF Handi Synthetic in 45-70 and a C.Sharps 1875 Sporting w/30" barrel in 45-2.1.
I've taken deer with all but the Sharps and plan that for this year. I have several bullet moulds and have taken three deer with the Handi and cast bullets, using the Lee 405HB and Lee340FB. Incidentally, the 45-70 is the only cartridge that I have used, that dropped all the animals in their tracks. None of the three deer took even one step after the shot.

My T/C 30/30 AI is very accurate and I have taken one deer at a range of about 60 yds using the Nosler 125g BTip. The doe took a couple steps and dropped. The best group for the AI has been one group of .75" at 200 yds.

As for taking Elk, I worked up a load for the Sharps but have not gotten to use it yet. This Elk load is the Lee 459 3R 500g. cast softly, at a velocity of 1,600 fps. It is stout, but manageable in the Sharps. It would be bone-jarring and eye-watering in the NEF.

I have some bolt rifles as well, and have been thinking about replacing some of them with more singles.

My 76 year old Dad shot a Moose with my single shot NEF Handi rifle in .35 Whelen.  I carry a single shot 30-06 during the winter and have taken several wolves with it over the years.

I have hunted elk with a TC Hawken muzzleloader for the past 12 years and felt very comfortable carrying a single shot.  I have lost count but my brother and I have taken over 20 elk with this type single shooter, with most of them being cows.   I drew a bull tag this year and I am taking a modern weapon, - a TC Encore.

not trying to sound like a snot but I have never had the need for a follow up shot.my 375 drops them.last year shot my buck with my 8MM K98K with a 196 gr norma soft point and he went 10 yards and piled up.
lots of bullets and poor hunting/shooting skills isn't the answer.
it's kind of funny that opening morning of deer season as the sun comes up sounds like a firefight and as the trucks come by in the afternoon most are empty.....

I fully agree with the rest of you guys.
When dad was still healthy enough to hunt I not only used a single shot, but just took one cartridge with me.  That really lit dad up!  Hehe.

Our dads must be cut from the same cloth! My huntin partner and my dad and I went on an Eagle Cap Wilderness drop hunt in '89, dad brought 80 rounds of .308 win with him! We were wonderin why his gear was so heavy, so was the hunt guide!!

:D Hey there single shooters.

Well, in the days before I gave my last #1 to my son I truely enjoyed my days afield with the single shot and never felt like I needed to take a back seat to anyone when it was time to fill the freezer.

I did have the chance to take my once in a lift time Ideeeehoo MOOSE with my #1 300 while it still called my place home, and never gave a minutes thought to being under gunned in the fire power dept.

My son has taken a number of game animals with his 270 and 300win. #1s and I would probably still be hunting with that 300 if the weight hadn't gotten to be to much for the arms.

Wish I had known about the Boonie Slings before I gave that last #1 to the son. He would have needed to wait awhile, and he has offered to give it back as it is, but doing OK with my A-Bolt at present. However, it sure doesn't have the class of the single shot.

If any of you older folk are having any problems with the arms hurting or going to sleep while holding on to the rifle in the field, give the Boonie Sling a try. It is very quick, much quicker then a shoulder sling, and takes the hurt out of having the rifle at the ready.

If I again came up with a #1 in a cal. worthy of the type of hunting I do around here, the bolt guns would sure enough end up playing second fiddle one more time.

Keep em coming!
