Contender 10" .223 Rem Questions
« on: April 14, 2011, 01:32:00 PM »
I got all excited last year and set up a 16" .223 rem barrel on my contender for a light carbine. But I have found it is the least shot configuration - I like shooting the 10"ers, and loading and casting for them.

What do you think of the 10" .223? How about with inexpensive milsurp/factory ammo? (Since I most likely won't be reloading for this.) I know what the .223 round can do in various rifles, but I'm curious as to the efficiency factor from a 10". I know it'll be loud. I'll most likely be firing offhand, iron sights in the field.

A 10" 223 barrel was number three added to my collection, somewhere around 1991 or 92.  It soon became my favorite barrel and still ranks right up there.  For quite a few years I loaded 55 gr bullets over IMR 3031 which resulted in great accuracy but also horendous muzzle report, shock wave and a bright white "coon's tail" that you could see even in the noonday sun.

A few years ago someone recommended lighter bullets and IMR 4198 as a great accuracy load with much reduced fire and brimstone.  I am now loading 40 gr bullets exclusively and love it.  I did not have a chrono back in my 3031 days but now I do.  The 23 grains of 4198 under a 40 grain V-max gave a 2834 fps 10 shot average out of my 10" Contender!  Of course you must work up your own loads independent of my data.

I still keep a few of the 3031 loads around for times when I want to be the center of attention.  It never fails to elicit comments at the shooting range!  While I don't disagree with the guys who poo poo the 223 in a 10" barrel, I much prefer the shorter tubes for many reasons (balance, carryability, etc) and will gladly give up whatever gains they get from the 14 inch tubes.  I think if you throw heavy bullets, the 14 inch has a definite edge, but with lighter bullets I'd venture to guess the performance is not that much more.

That being said, I keep thinking about trying a 10" 221 fireball.  I'm thinking it is the only round that may supplant my 223 in a 10" barrel as my favorite.  Or maybe I'll try an AI Hornet ..............ahhhh, so many calibers so little time!

P.S.  I just snapped to the fact you said you'd be shooting factory or milsurp ammo.  I still say "go for it" and you'll have fun!  Just don't pay a premium price for one in case you don't like it.  I think a 10" might be a little harder to sell than a longer one, but I could be wrong.  I traded some tools for mine and won't be parting with it any time soon, even if I add a 221 or Hornet.
Lord, please help me to be half the man my dogs think I am.

Cant think of a thing that Curtis hasent already covered.
Shooting factory or Mil ammo thru a 10 barrel will not make you any friends from the folks who are near you at the local range.
The fireball and shock wave Is pretty impressive.

A 10 inch 223 barrel is the funnest barrel I have, and I have lots of barrels. A 10 inch 30-30 is fun too

I have had 2 10" .223 Contender Barrels over the years and I too ended up loading 40gr. Bullets with IMR-4198 Powder. I'd have to check my notes but I am thinking the velocity Curtis quoted is really close to the same velocity I was getting. I too tried a few different factory loads and handloads but never did achieve the accuracy or velocity I did with the 40gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip / IMR-4198 Loads. The 40gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip / IMR-4198 loads were just plain fun to shoot.

Even in another configuration, the 7mmTCU, the 223 is fun in a 10".   I've been able to shoot it to 200 yards with a simple lead bullet.  It's fun but, true enough, the rifle shooters beside you are going to notice!

I'm loving what I am hearing about these 10" barrels.

I have 5 encore frames and a herd of barrels to go with them.  Last year I lucked into a contender carbine 204 ruger that came with three 14 inch barrels in different calibers all sporting leupold eer scopes.

In the last two weeks I have traded away the 14" barrels and picked up three 10" barrels,( 22 LR, 22 Hornet, .223 Rem) and close to buying a 10" 300 whisper.  I have not fired any.  They are all in VA and I am at my Hunting Lodge in Uruguay.  I can't wait to get home in June and shoot them before my brother shoots all the rifling out of them. :)
