Re-chambering question?
« on: August 30, 2004, 03:01:43 AM »
Hi Everyone, My hunting partner has a pre 64 Win M70 in 30-06 and he was wondering if it was possible to re-chamber it to .300 H&H Magnum. I've told him it probably would just be easier to sell it and pick up another rifle. Can you tell me if this could be done or is it easier to just buy another rifle? Thanks! CEJ

The Mod 70 came in a 30 H&H so I'm sure the action would hold it. You would have to modify or replace the bolt face because the head diameter on the H&H is larger. You would also have to replace the magazine frame and follower to accommodate the .3" longer cartridge

Rechambering the barrel would be pretty easy, nothing more than reaming. The twist rate on the H&H was 1:10, probably the same as the '06 barrel. A pretty easy conversion except the bolt.

It would be a shame to modify a good pre-64, but then it's yours not mine.

While the 300 H&H was chambered not a great number were made.  The 30-06 on the other hand was the most common caliber or at last close to it.  The bolt stop will also have to be changed I believe.  I don't really know what other modifications were needed to make the full length mag fit in the old M70 action.  I'll try and look at mine to see if I can spot anything else.  This would be a good way to get into a good 300 H&H for hunting.  I would not use a collector grade rifle for the conversion and might consider a good used pre64 barrel to be rechambered...  Also I'd pick my gunsmith for such a conversion with great care..

Gentleman - Your points are all well taken and I agree with them. Did a quick search and did locate a Win 70 barrel chambered in .300 H&H but the price was a little steep (600.00). We knew about the bolt face but forgot about the magazine. His rifle is just a run of the mill pre 64 plain jane with the standard receiver sights. If it were mine I'd just sell it and have a .300 H&H built from scratch. Your point about the gunsmith is also well taken, he's researching that now. Thanks for all you help! CEJ...

CEJ1895,

When converting from 30-06 to .300 H&H you need to open the bolt face, rechamber and headspace barrel, replace/modify the extractor, replace ejector, bolt stop, magazine and follower.  The receiver ejection port should be opened to the rear for good ejection.  Drill and tap one scope base hole.  The feed lips may have to be modified to get good feeding.

Good luck,
Headache

Has he considered the 30-06AI or 30Gibbs?  Both provide better performance than 30-06 but with less modifications.
