Bear bait question
« on: May 18, 2004, 01:14:54 PM »
have been wondering if you could use salted fish like us trappers sometimes make for bait. The old method of- layer of fish, layer of salt, fish, salt….
Will the bears be interested in this bait?
And will they continue to eat it or will they be turned off by the high amount of salt in it?
The area I would be using this in is in a tamarak swamp.

I'd stick with the old doughnuts myself...
Down with Maine Citizens for Fair Bear hunting!
----It will kill Maine's hunting economy....Is this really what we need?
----Plus, all you other Northeasterners, if it goes through here.......your more then likely NEXT

Blackys like anything free;) they are opportunist, but if they are not familiar with fish they may not eat it, I like to use bacon fat, rub it all over everything, marshmallows work well also and of course like mentioned donuts, old pastry, meats scrapes, jello, Raw Molasses is really good as well, pour it all over the bait and everything, the bears get it on the paws and track it all over the woods for other bears to follow;) good luck, hunt safe. Aim small hit small. RAMbo.

I’ve herd that old watermelon that has fermented attracts bears nicely. The smell would carry quite well; of course you would have too open it up.

These bears are used to fish.
The spot is up towards the top end of the mississippi river where you can toss a rock across it.

foxtail, I've been thinkin alot of coon baits/lures should work for bears. I've heard the smell of anise is attractive to bears, maybe some Pro-Coon?

foxtail, I know that our Minnesota bears won't go after rotten fish or meat. I've never wanted to share my salted fish with them, when there's much more proven baits around. Very cheap dried dog food soaked in "fast Food"  grease, with cattle grade molasses and a tad of anise is a killer. And, if you are a trapper, freeze your Beaver meat to add to this plate. A bear will travel miles for beaver parts (no bones thou.. that's the law).

using meat in Mn. is legal but you can't have any bone in it. I think fish would work but I would douse with sugar or brown sugar. no salt.
