cracked frame
« on: September 02, 2004, 06:24:42 PM »
On my nef frame Just under the firning pin there appears to be a small CRESENT shaped crack It is in a rather odd positon and follows no maching for the firig pin that I can tell . It leaves a mark across the primer on spent cases
This frame came with a 30-06 barrel and I added a 223 heavy barrel and I have shot very little with the 06 but several thousand .223s
Has anybody heard of them doing this ?

300 LoudnBoomer, Send it back to NEF (if is it a new one, since the company change). They should replace it for you even if it's more than a year old. To check if it was made by the "new" NEF/H&R1871, just call or e-mail them with the serial number. It might not blow up in your face but I would not shoot it any more!!! If you have any problems please feel free to e-mail me at armartin1(at)comcast.net or PM me and I will do all I can to help you out. Again, please don't shoot it again, especially with the 30-06 barrel. How old is it, did you buy it new? When (what year) did H&R add the new .223 barrel? What is the serial number? (replace the last 3 digits with x's)....<><....

The rifle is about 2 1/2 years old the s/n is 379XXX  , It was bought after marlin bought the company and the barrels were added shortly after bought it Should this gun turnout to be unsafe I will be plenty mad ! The 30-06 barrel has less than 2 boxes ammo through it and the 45-70 barrel has maybe 100 and the 12 ga barrel has never even been fired , I have fired the 223 alot though .

300 Loudnboomer, Become more goal oriented, don't waste your time and spin your wheels being mad, that gets you nowhere and just tears you up inside. If it's bad just call and send it back, continue to march and thank their great warranty....<><....

I have delt with customer service at H&R when I bought the additional barrels , The service I got was about the worst I have ever seen . I will give them a chance but If it is handled like the last time this is scrap.

300',

I may be wrong; but I wonder if you're getting primer 'cratering' and if the crescent you are seeing isn't just the outline of the recoil plate that is pressed into place on the frame when the firing pin and related parts are put into the frame.

You may not have a problem.....     Primer cratering doesn't always mean a significant problem....and the outline of the recoil plate is visible on many (different) firearms.

Ask a good, trusted gunsmith or friend from a club or shooting range what he/she thinks if they can look at it.

Take care.

I can tell you for sure it is not primer cratering , I would find it very hard to belive that the recoil shield would have a crescent shaped seam that runs across the middle of the case head were it is going to see the most rear thrust .
I am willing to bet that when I talk to H&R they will request that I send it back to them for inspection , If it is not repairable they they will never return the receiver but I hope they will replace it .

If you do send it back make sure you advise them that you have additional barrels for it.  If they replace the receiver there is a chance your barrels will not fit the new receiver.  They should pay for you to ship the whole package back to them so they can repair/replace the action and fit your barrels.
