25/06 in 22",24",26" barrel-any major differe
« on: September 18, 2004, 05:47:26 AM »
I'm thinking of getting a 25/06[either bolt action or single shot].I see that most bolt actions are in 22".Does one "suffer" with that length versus a longer barrel?I'll be using the 25/06 for mulies, antelope, coyotes and varmints.[my first choice would be the stainless Ruger K77].
Thanks.

hans g./UpS,

Excellent choice in the .25-06.  I am a BIG fan of the "Quarter Bores" and the Crown Prince of them is the .25-06.  I believe you will find that most .25-06's come with a 24" barrel although all three of mine(two Rugers(one a older tang safety M77V and the other is a No 1) one Remington M700 BDL Varmint) have 26" barrels.  To get the most out of the .25-06 you really should have a barrel of at least 24 inches to make sure all the powder is burnt.  If you need any load information feel free to ask away.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog

:D The 25-06 is a nice gun. I don't think the difference in barrel lenghts will affect anything much. You may lose a little velocity with a shorter barrel but a shorter barrel should be more rigid. Good luck with your new rifle. You will have plenty of velocity even in a 22".
