I just tryed out a 12" 375 winchester barrel I bought used for $100. It seems to work fine. I only have 4198 powder for a load with 220 gr hornaday bullets. Whats a popular load for this round? The barrel has a break on it and was easy to shoot. Seemed accurate too but I need to load more ammo to be sure.

I ended up with a load of 34 1/2 gr of RE-7. In the Horn manual it is a little less than max. Brass lasts a long time, book sez about 1900 FPS 1763 ME which is almost twice the ME of a 44 Mag. Recoil with this load to me is much more tolerable than the 44 mag in a lighter wheelgun. This load will cloverleaf 3 at a 100 very regulary. I really do like it. Haven't drwn any blood yet, but it will be my main gun for hogs this year.

For hunting loads, the two best powders for this cartridge, IME, are Reloder 7 and AA1680. Both produce high velocities and very good accuracy. I prefer the 220 Hornady myself, but the 200 Sierra has had good reviews too.

The best accuracy for me has been with IMR4227 and AA5744 with cast bullets, but velocities are relatively low - in the .38-55 range. The RCBS bullets were loaded into the lands and the muzzle tipped up before each shot.

Congratulations on getting the 375 Winchester barrel. I really like mine and use the Hornady 220 grain bullets over 34.0 grains of Reloder 7 powder. This load shoots great in the Contender and also in my Marlin Model 375 levergun. Good hunting!

I have always used the IMR 4198 and the Hornady 220's, and have found the load to be quite sufficient. Several whitetails have fallen to the load, and my brother-in-law is taking it on a bear hunt in the next week or two. We'll let you fellas know how it performed after I receive word from him (but I'm sure that it'll do the trick!)
