223 Factory 23" Barrel
« on: September 08, 2004, 02:25:45 PM »
Hi All,

There have been some folks wondering about the difference in performance between the factory and custom T/C barrels chambered in 223 Remington.

I can't report on the custom barrel, but here is what my new factory barrel did today(got it from "eabco"):

1. Shots were taken at 125 yds(longest shot possible accross my pasture)  These are 3 shot groups.
2. Prior to today there had been 12 shots run through the new barrel(just to get aquainted).

3. Sierra 55g SPT over 26g H4895 gave up .30" @ 125 yds.

4. Combined Technology 55g Ball Silvertip over 26g H4895 turned in .50"  @ 125 yds. (I think this can be improved)

5. Hornady 50g V-Max over 26g H4895 turned in 1.0" @ 125 yds. (I think this can be improved)

Primers are CCI 400. Powder was not weighed, but was thrown from the 1.9 dipper in my Lee Powder Dipper Set  .  Scope is a Simmons 6.5-20. Loads were prepared with my RCBS Rockchucker and Lee Deluxe Dies. Cases were neck-sized in the "collet die".

This kind of accuracy from charges that were thrown and not weighed, plus coming from a barrel with less than 50 shots through it has to mean its a keeper!
