What scopes, variable or fixed power, are people using on their .30 and larger lever guns and how are they performing? Would anyone change their decision after being in the field? I am considering a .44 lever and would put either a fixed 4X such as Leupold's M8 fixed, or a 1.5X - 5X. Just would like to see what others are using.

I put a Leopold VX-III 1.75 X 6 X 32 on my 1895.....I wouldn't change a thing.

Since 1988 I've had a 1.75x5x20 Tasco® World Class Wide Angle on my Marlin® Mdl 336. It's very clear & fast.

My Marlin has a Weaver K-2.5, and my Model 88 has a Tasco 2.5X also fixed power scope. Both do what I need of them very well.

I put a Nikon 3-9x on a model 88 in 308, but other than that, I stick with iron sights on lever guns.

A red dot sight might tempt me, or a compact 2x scope, if my eyes get worse. That would be for traditional lever gun cartridges, with flat nosed bullets and no more than 2500 fps muzzle velocity.

My only scoped lever gun, a Marlin in .35 Remington, used to wear a good old Weaver steel K-3 but was damaged when I lent it out (never do that again). I put a new V-3 on it and like it even more than the old K-3. At 1x it is as easy as a red dot but no batteries to go dead. I think it will be especially useful in the grey haze of the early morning when it can be very hard to find the target in the scope.

Depending on what type of hunting your doing with athe 44 lever gun, a red dot scope may also be a good option. No paralex, no eye relief, shoot with both eyes open (if you want). Very fast target aquisition.

I've scoped 3 of my rifles, including my hardest hitting lever action, a Winchester Big Bore in 444, with Bushnell's Dawn to Dusk 1.5-4.5x scopes and am very, very happy with them. They run about $80 and give great clarity. They are rugged and dependable. Will probably get another. Mikey.
