Ok, that's odd, but in a good way I guess.  NEF doesn't list a sportster SS1 (single shot) or sportster SL1 (semi auto-loader) in 17hm2, and I can't find it in a big distributors list either.

So you're going to have to give us the specks.  Is this a single shot or semi auto, what stocks, barrel contour, etc?

And I don't want to insult, so don't take this question that way, I don't know you or anything about you or your knowledge of firearms.  That said, is it a single shot bull barrel with 17HMR written on the side of the barrel right above the breech?

I also just bought a NEF Sportster in Mach 2.

Heavy, 22" barrel, synthetic stock (which has to go).

On the barrel, it says;

Sportster
.17 Mach 2

And thats it, other that the usual read the manual stuff on the opposite side of the barrel. Stuck a .22 short case in it just so I could try the trigger and it actually has a pretty decent trigger in it. :)

Now, I too am waiting for ammo. Oh, paid $145 for it in Norfolk Nebraska.

Yes, I also picked one up today along with a used tracker 2 in of all things 12ga (that ought to really get Sruffy going). I paid $149 at Williams Gunsight in Davison, MI I examined one on the wall and they gave me one in the box from the back and they have more. Trigger was very crisp and light. Heavy barrel contour with synthetic stock just like my 22lr Sportster.

Ammo is not yet available from Hornady, but it is supposed to fire the Aguila(sp?) with no problem.

Now what scope to choose?

:)   Sorry but that's not enough to get me going this early in the morning...  but I'll try and fake it...  Here goes -

"Hey, by all means, go beat yourself up with the 12."  (is that what you were looking for???  :-D   )

Just kidding, get out there and slug a deer with it.  If it rains and freezing rains a day or two like it did last deer season I'll once again put the scoped ultra 20 away and pull out my pardner 12 gauge and a box of brenneke slugs.  Ol'reliable!

You guys, buying those 17hm2's, no ammo, man I couldn't do it.  It would be like buying a new truck and not driving it because it took special gas that wasn't sold yet.  Just having it in my garage would kill me!  I think I'd have to put it on layaway.

Sruffy,

Although the Hornady Ammo is not yet available, you can fire the 17 Aguila safely in this gun. I picked up a couple of boxes when I got the gun. This will suffice me until the Hornady is available, and maybe I will like it better as it is about 200fps slower and uses a FMJ bullet so there should be less meat destruction on squirrels than the HM2, while giving nearly flat trajectory out to 100yds, a big advantage over the 22lr.

I am still out for a scope for it, so I can't really shoot it yet anyway.

Hey HN (or any one else that's in the know) is the 17 aguila ammo based on the standard 22lr case?  I've read the HM2 is the 22 stinger (cci) case, but haven't read anything about the 17 aguila.

The Aguila is based on the standerd 22lr necked down to 17, slightly shorter than the 17HM2 which is based on the stinger case. The Aguila can be fired from the HM2 chamber, but not vise versa; kinda like shooting shorts and longs in a long rifle chamber. There is an article that has been linked up several times that explains it all. Look through the posts and  you'll find the link.

I bought my Aguila ammo from Williams Gunsight in Davison, MI which is where I bought the gun also. It was pricy at nearly $8 per box tax included. I think the prices are supposed to be around $5 per box, but do to current availability prices are higher. The selling point for both HM2 and Aguila are supposed to be dramatic improved performance and accuracy over 22lr without the price of the 17HMR ammo.

I think another advantage should be less meat damage than the HMR with the flatter trajectory. I'm thinking the HM2 will probably still do a lot of damage, but the Aguila wich is 200fps slower and a FMJ bullet might be an ideal blend of flat trajectory but not blowing up on impact. We'll see when I get it shooting and squirrel season starts hear in MI on the 15th.

Yep, The NEF 17hm2 is out in the local gunshop.  17hm2 ammo should be arriving in 2 to 3 weeks.  Let us know how they shoot
