encore composite butt stock
« on: March 24, 2004, 08:52:37 AM »
first post. I bought a 209/50 encore stainless with composite camo stock last week. I hope the weather man is right so I can take it out and shoot it this weekend. I like every thing about the gun except for the hollow butt stock. Has any one tried to fill the butt stock with something solid but lite. I thought about insulation foam called great stuff, Not sure how the chemicals in the foam would react with plastic stock. Any suggestions, I don't want the gun to heavy to hunt with. I really like the looks of the camo stock and will use it hollow if need be.
It is better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it!!

My cure for this is always the same.  I take gray packing foam (the softer kind that PC parts usually ship in), cut it into appropriate sized chunks, and then STUFF the chunks.  It's an art.     Lightweight, doesn't hurt a thing, easily reversible, and if you want to add a bit of weight you can just pick your spot to add the weights and pack it on in with the foam.

With this method I deaden that hollow sound and give the recoil pad a little something to butt against.
WHUT?

I used Great Stuff on my rifle.
I have a Savage. The gun was lightweight. I removed the butt plate and saw the stock was filled with foam. It looked just like Great Stuff. I cut out a hole 8 inches deep, and added a pound of #12 shot. Then, I squirted in Great Stuff to fill it back up.
I have used Great Stuff by the case doing various remodeling and construction jobs, I never saw it corrode plastic. I have seen it corrode the skin of my hands a few times.
Aim small don't miss.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm going to try the packing foam first and see how it works, before I try great stuff.
