Hi All;
Well spring is just arround the corner and it's time to plan a few trips.
I get way out in the back country,and I realy verry much rely on my compas and GPS,but my GPS is a old Eagle Map Guide.
The build in cpu does not have the external programable software.What is a good programable unit on the market now were you can down load topo map info.

I have a Garmin Vista. From my experience, Garmins are MUCH easier to use than any other on the market. The Vista also has 28meg onboard memory you can download into. I travel all over the country and wouldn't be caught dead without it.

My father-in-law has had a Magellan for 2 years now and still doesn't know how to use all the features. The Garmin is very user friendly.

I think the garmin makes a good unit.I'm leaning torth the Garmin.
I like the Eagle Mao Guide I been using for years,but the display is getting dark.I think I droped once to often.I never had problems locking on except in heavy snow conditions,but that is realy when you need it when you loose the land markes. Lp.

A buddy of mine bought the Eagle teh same time I bought my first Garmin. We used to elk unt in Wyoming and I carried mine all the time. He however would leave his in camp because it was big and heavy. Remember, humping up and down the Rockies all week takes a toll and your pack gets a LOT lighter on day 3!

Like I said, I got the Vista. My brother and a work associate also bought the Vista and love it!

TNX for your input.My Eagle Map Guide served me well,Yes it is a little bigger than some,but it was always reliable.I would not think about getting a nother GPS but the Crystal display is getting dark so its time for a new one.Lp.

Well I just got my new GPS.
I settled on a Etrex Legend.Its a nice compact unit and a good lock time,even in the house and on heavy overcast days.
I found the accuracy is great,I have seen 5yds.I walked arround the house,my house is U shaped and checked the track and it is just like the house.Tested the waypoint and walked about 300 yds and the return was down to two feet.
The battery life is good.I think it will work out good.

Ditto the above. Garmin Vista is excellent!

But... (there's always a but) under heavy tree cover AND heavy clouds, satellite acquisition can be slow or (rarely) nonexistent. I don't know if the etrex family is worse or better than other (internal antenna) units.

Even so, I chose the Vista - it's others features make up for this slight drwaback.

bought 2 garmin rino's 120''s We are pleased with the performance. both my wife and hunting buddy use the second one and find it easy to get back to camp neither has a sense of direction and the radio tracking feature helps me keep track of them and tell them when to start back to camp.
