Shooting a Rem 700P
« on: April 19, 2005, 10:03:01 PM »
Hi, To all owners of Rem 700P. Can military surplus rounds in 5.56mm and 7.62mm be shot through the Rem 700P. Will there be any problems. How is the accuracy? Eddie.

You just spent $700+ for a nice rifle, Why would you want to put crappy ammo through it? If you really want it to perform you need to find some good load combinations for it. You'll probably be disappointed with surplus accuracy.  KN

Yea, I was kind of thinking the same thing.

Unless of course you were intending on using it just for plinking? But if you were hunting or match shooting with it (serious stuff), don't go cheap on it and get good ammo. Factory or handloaded. That surplus ammo could have been exposed to elements that you wouldn't expose good ammunition to and could have been sitting in a warehouse for years (weak casings, bad primers, etc etc).

Have fun with your new rifle!!  :D

eddiesa223, it is perfectly safe, if that is your concern. It won't usually be extremely accurate, but like JPSaxMan says, it works for plinking. I would say on average, I get about double the group size compared to good factory ammo. But for can and bottle shooting, it is tough to beat cost wise.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate your replies. It's just that in my part of country commercial bullets are extremely hard to buy. Military bullets are many, and I do thought of reloading the military bullet. Thanks again. Eddie.

Well, now, that is a horse of a different color! The reloads should be plenty accurate. And the military stuff really is accurate enough for most purposes.
P.S.
Just what country are we talking about, where commercial .223 and .308 are hard to find?
