I am getting ready to buy a new scope.  My old one did not survive the last deer season.  I have pretty much settled on a Bushnell Elite 3200 in 3/9 but wonder if a 2/7 wouldn't be better.  I hunt whitetail in Missouri, so my longest shot is rarely over 100 yards.

Does the rainguard feature really work?

How does the Bushnell compare with the Nikon Buckmaster and the others in the same price range.

Thoughts.

Yes in my opinion the Elite 3200 2-7 is more appropriate. That's what's on my primary deer rifle. Yes the Rainguard coating works as advertised. Can't comment on the Nikons as I don't use them. See no need as I use either Bushnell or Leupold on pretty much every thing.

The 2-7 should be more then enough for MO whitetails.  I hunt near Collins and went with a Elite 3x9 due to some long narrow pastures where I hunt.  Of coarse the buck I took this year was at 30 yards just like last year.  The shot was made near dusk on a cloudy day in a creek bottom.  Scope did great in the very low light scope set on 3x.  I well probably never need the 9x power.  I almost went with a fixed 6x but I'm glad I went with the variable would of been hard to pick this deer out of the brush with a 6x.

This year I hunted on my son's father-in-law Bill's farm south of Warrensberg.   I hunted from my son's tree stand. Hiis longest shot is maybe 100 yards.  The location overlooks the convergence of several  well established deer trails, so, at least on opening day, there is always some action. I also did some still hunting in Bill's wood lot.  Only chance I had was on a buck that was no more that 20 yards away.  Unfortunately,  I was not holding my rifle at the time I spotted the buck.   I had been using my binos  on the woods nearby.  Didn't get my rifle up before the buck spotted me and ran white tail up.  No way I could get a shot.  Only other chance I had was on a doe that Bill had spooked my direction. By that time the rain had completely fogged my scope.  With the new Elite 3200 I hope to do better next year.  That is why I asked about rainguard.   I figure if I hunt the same woods I will keep the scope at 2 power unless it is necessary for me to dial up.  I also figure that if I hunt some other, more open, place, and I  think I need something more than 7 power I am shooting farther than I really should.      Hell, I went a lifetime using a 4X fixed.  9 power is further than I want to shoot.  Maybe some of you young bucks are willing to shoot at 350 or 400 yards, but not me.  If I can't get closer to the game than that, well, the deer deserves to get away and I deserve to be escorted out of the woods.

Mounted the scope on my rifle last night, took it to the range this morning and it was sighted in six shots.  Two at 50 meters and 4 at 100 meters. I would have taken five but I pulled on my third shot at 100 meters.  Ended up 1 1/2 inches right and 1 inch high.  Last shot was 1 inch high and on target.  Just where I wanted it.

I have a question, does the Bushnell Elite hold center as you change powers?   When I moved from 50 to 100 meters I changed the power from two to four and it shot 2 inches lower than I anticpated. Before changing elevation, I put my fourth shot next to the third so I know it wasn't the shooter.

Very clear, easy target acquisition.  A like the sight a lot.
