Receiver Sight

I have a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem.  I bought the rifle new a few weeks ago.
I am looking at reciever sights at Midway USA and can not decide between the Williams 5D-94/36 (mounts on the side) or the WIlliams 5D-336 which mounts on the receiver using the scope mount holes.  Any suggestions?

Neither. Get the Williams WRGS, which mounts cleanly on top using the rear scope mount holes. Cheaper , better looking, and more durable.

I have a 336 in .30-30 WCF.  After my Lyman 66 literally fell apart on me, I decided to go with the FP 94/336, using the pre-drilled and tapped holes on the side of the receiver.   It also included the Firesight front sight.  

Haven't shot it yet, but it went on slick as a whistle, and I like the "clean" look of the sight design.

One thing though.  If you decide to change out the front sight also, you may have to file down the bottom of the new sight to get it into the dovetail of the sight block.  Just an FYI.

Better check on the capabuility of the Williams and the front mounts and the Marlin.I just went thru it today.The screw's and threads are not the same atleast on the flat based model.I have to send em back.Know drill and Tap for me and an iron sight.

Someone sent me a Lyman side mount peeper and I like it.Just as quick as the factory sight and more accurate I assume from the sight picture.

I got the Williams for the 336 that mounts in the rear scope holes for my Marlin 1895 and I think it's great.  I had originally gotten the one that mounts on the side of the receiver, but then I realized that they don't drill and tap the side of the receiver so I got the 336, wouldn't trade it.  Good and tough.

My receiver sight hangs over the side, but it doesn't bother me.  I don't know if I HAD to get a new front sight, but I don't like beads so I got a blade sight from Midway.  I have seen Williams sights in their catalog that don't hang over the side but they didn't appeal to me because they didn't look like they have too much elevation and windage adjustment.

Williams WRGS doesn't hang over the side like the ugly 5D and FP series.

I didn't need a new front post with my 1895 Guide Gun, but I got a Firesight anyway.

I am also looking a a receiver sight but I have a question.  Which one of the two (Williams FP or Lyman 66) would be better on a 1895G?  I want the click adjustments and these are the only two I found with these adjustments. Thanks

I think it would be wise to stop and think about the "value" of adjustments. So far we are talkiing about putting a sight on a levergun, not a match rifle. So the normal usage model is called "sight it in and leave it alone". Given that usage, are you sure you want to spend the extra (and ugly to boot) for a sight with click adjustments?

The Williams WRGS is not difficult to adjust. If you can handle a screwdriver, you can adjust the WRGS. And once it is adjusted, there's no reason to mess with it.

Too many people are just following "tradition" (Gramps did it so it must be good) and hang a sight made for an M94 Winchester on their Marlin. Marlin's don't have Winchester's limitations, so you don't need a goofly glob of steel hanging over the side of your Marlin. There's better options for hunters and the WRGS is one of the best.

I've used both the 5D, the WGRS and the Foolproof since I started shooting 40+ years ago.  My 336 has the 5D.  It is marginally easier to adjust than the WGRS.  If you are going to be using one load all the time, the WGRS is great.  If you are going to be using various loads so needing to adjust the point of impact, I would spring for the Foolproof.  All three are stout and can take the lumps from hunting.

I got the 5D-336.  It went on real easy and looks good, I haven't shot it yet but it dosen't look like I will need to change out the front sight.  But there is not much fun in that.

By the way, the best cut out hood is the stainless steel version that Marlin ships with their stainless 22lr's. The shiney stainless "vanishes" from view, unlike the blued version. Just something to remember.

Williams makes a cut out front hood = $8.95.  The 5D receiver sight I just put on was $32 and you can screw out the apeture and you have a ghost ring peep.  Alot cheaper than that WWG set up, but I do admit it looks pretty mean.

That looks H... for stout!  I'm not a big fan of the firesight type of sights, as with my 60 year old eyes they become a fuzzy glare - I went to the Lyman 17A globe front sight.  I like the wings on this rear sight.  However, I have never had any problems with any Williams sight not being strong enough out in the field so I don't know if the extra protection is worth while.  The fact that this one will accept apertures from Williams is a plus.  They come in handy for fine work, sighting in, etc.

I have the FP on both my 336 and 62. It`s the perfect sight for the 336 but very obtrusive on the 62 because it extends high and rearward. It is to be replaced by the WGRS soon. That I think will be exactly what I want. Very compact. I`m willing to trade the FP ($81.50 for a WGRS $34.95) If anyone is interested PM me. POW

I put the 5D sight on sighted it in.  I am about 3 inches high at 50 with no more room to move down.  Looks like I will need a firesight after all.  Any one have a size they used?  By the way the little 35 is putting them in less than an inch at 50, not bad for my backup gun!

e_collup I had used one of the slip on hoods until I tapered the barrel and installed a FP receiver sight. The front sight I needed then would not allow its use. Be careful to get the proper front sight height before using the hood as it may possibly be too tall as mine was. POW

I had one and sold it, wouldnt have another one. Way too much money I dont think it was worth it. And you are too limited on windage adjustments. I couldnt get enough right windage out it. It is heavy duty, but I have never had the need to use my rifle as a club, so I dont see the point.

As far as the williams sights go I have all 3. The FP, 5D, and WGRS. All are very easy to use and adjust. I think they are probably the best type sights for the money on the market. And I have never had a problem with them in the field. Matter of fact I just ordered a 5D and a green fire sight for my new 336 SC (new to me)
