spanish mauser scope base
« on: September 16, 2004, 05:52:13 PM »
hello all. i have a spanish mauser that i'm going to have drilled and tapped by a friend (amacher gunsmith) he's a good friend and a very good marksman he sadi he has drilled a few 98 mauser in his day and that i'll he would need is the scope base. well here is my problem i was looking on midway and  saw that they had mounts for many different mausers (ie some for 98's some for 93's........)i want a two pice mount and i don't think (from what i read on midway that i can use 98's on my 1916 mauser , which is a 93) so what do i do?? if it is a two pice mount then i think it wouldn't matter because i believe action length  is the only thing different. some one please educate me please. thank you

Mitchell:  post your question in the Gunsmithing Forum and let the gunnut69 have a go at it.  That fella is extremely resourceful and may already have an answer for you.

In the interim if anyone out there has scoped one of those 93 action Spanish Mausers let us know how you fared with your scope mounts.  HTH.  Mikey.

Measure your front ring size its either 1.400" Large ring or 1.300" small ring.  I've used the see thru mounts at Samco for both my small ring and large ring mausers by changing the front base. The mount base ring kit from samco is for large rings so thats why I changed the front base its a $6 weaver base.                                                 BigBill

You need to get the bases for a M96 Mauser.  They will work perfectly on your M1916.  I have always preferred a one piece Redfield/Leupold/Burris type base with the windage adjustment.  They work out easier than the two piece bases.  If the action is D&T'd correctly there shouldn't be a problem. Your choice though.  Just make sure your freind drills the front reciever ring correctly.  Most bases should have the front of the base pretty much even with the front of the reciever ring.  Thus the rear hole in the reciever ring wil be in front of the top locking lug surface (inside where the bolt lugs lock into the inside top of the reciever).  If it is to far back and the hole is drilled behind the locking lug surface then the locking surface may be weakened and allow the locking lugs to set back on firing.
