30-30 Accelerators any good?
« on: September 20, 2004, 07:19:10 AM »
I just would like to know if anyone has used these.  My son was thinking about them for his 30-30 Marlin.  Of course he knows they can only be used single shot or one in the pipe and the other in the tube.

Now has anyone used them in a H&R 30-30 barrel?

I don't know about the 30-30, but I imagine you would have to develope a load to make them work.  I have been working with them in a 30-06 to go coyote hunting with my daughter, she shoots a .243 handi with a 60 grain hollow point.  I'm hoping the little 55 grain bullet will not create the pelt damage of the larger bullet.  With 50 grains of IMR-3031 I'm able to keep them in about 1 1/2 inches at 50 yards, which is good enough for the distance I will be shooting.  Most of the data that I've read indicates that the sabot will not give the acceracy of a .223, 22-250 or such, however I can see it increasing the versatility of the 30 calibers.  Also what I've read indicates that you must have a clean barrel of copper and lead fouling to get any kind of accuracy, and your faster burning powders will work better.
Thanks,

I have shot these for about 20 years. They are devastating on varmits.I find them to be very accurate as the factory loaded them.
I,of course, keep my guns clean but I don't do any special cleaning befiore shooting them.I seem to get better accuracy with them from my Marlin 336C than I do from my H&R Handi rifle.

I tried them in my NEF 30-30 and they shot pretty good.  About 1.5 at 50 yards with the open sights.  Tried them again with a 4x scope and they shot just under an inch.  No 100 yard data and I  only bought one box of 20 so they are long gone.  Shotgun News often has an add in it with components for sale.  With those you could load for any .30 cal :-)

If you have a .224 cal rifle, then these will never outshoot it but if you need .224 at close ranges they are a solution.
