New England/TC Hawkens
« on: October 08, 2004, 04:42:35 PM »
went to the local sporting goods store to buy a M91/30 today. and had my licence flagged. couldn't complete the transfer, so i didn't get the mosin.( if i've confused you i'm in CanaDUH!! ) my eyes wandered dangerously towards the consignment rack and noticed a pair of percussion hawkens. i could only see the tag for one of them and it was labeled TC New England. is this a thompson center or a different brand? the price was only $160, $10 more than the M/N and now i can't choose. the ramrod was missing but i assume a piece of dowel would work just as well? the store also sells replacement ramrods.

Thompson Center made a black powder rifle called the New Englander.  The ones that I remember had a round barrel and a black synthetic stock.

Round barrel on a New Englander

Perhaps some New Englander models might have had round barrells but my .54 has a hexagonal barrell.

If you're seriously desiring a muzzleloader, ask to handle the rifle.  If it has "Thompson/Center Arms" on the side of the barrel, and  "New Englander" stamped into the top of the barrel, then it is a Thompson Center New Englander.  The caliber will also be stamped there.

Mine is a round barrel, with a wood stock.  Mine is a 50 caliber and is a very accurate rifle, once you find the ideal patching thickness and the ideal powder charge.

If you are just casually thinking about jumping into muzzleloaders because you couldn't buy a centerfire rifle today, you probably shouldn't.  The world of blackpowder muzzleloaders is vastly different from centerfires.  It's loads of fun, but it's not a centerfire rifle.  Be aware what you are doing.

No, a dowel will not work just as well.  Absolutely not!  A dowel may break and stab you through the hand while using it.  The wooden ramrods for a muzzleloader are made of a straight grained hickory that should not snap off and impale your hand.  Various synthetic or metal ramrods are available and these work well.... but NEVER use an ordinary dowel rod.

Regards,

Jerry.

no, i decided not to get it. for the reasons you mentioned and it's not the one i really want. i've wanted a hawkens for a long time, but i'll probably buy a new one and all the accessories when i'm less strapped for cash. i fell i should own at least one new firearm! :?
