Season Opener in Maine For the Hounders!!!
« on: September 13, 2004, 01:42:38 AM »
Yeeeeeeehhhhhhawwwwwww been waikting for this day for a while, hound season started today in Maine. I have morning classes all during the week for college but will head out this Saturday most likely and get some running done. I just hpe the Referendum doesn't go through this year so I can get out constantly after college.

I'll have some pictures of the season in a couple of weeks when I've had enough time to take some...

Sounds like loads of fun.  I've hunted rabbits with beagles for years, and was wondering, what kind of hound do you run bear with, and in general, how far and how long will a bear run?  What does a bear do when he gets tired of running, as a rabbit will hole up.  Doging dear is illegal here in TN, and most beaglers consider deer running to be a serious fault with the hound.  Part of the problem is that deer will leave the country and take the dogs with them.  Had one dog that struck a deer that I got back a week later 25 miles from where I let him go!  No fun when the rabbit hunt turns into a dog hunt!

Interesting hobby, bear hunting with hounds.....I'd love to hear more!

Well, it is a great thing, you as a beagler should know yourself how awesome it is to hear your dogs howling through the woods chasing a game animall...

Here are your question answered:
The main breeds of dogs I use for bear hunting are Treeing Walker Hounds, Blueticks, and Black and Tans...
When bear get tired, they either climb a tree and get shot, or bay up and get shot...If you ever tree a moither and cub I STRONGLY suggest getting the dogs out of their QUICK. If not, there WILL be trouble with the sow. And as a very last resort if your in trouble (such as getting dogs and are within 5 feet of tree and mother starts climbing down, SHOOT THE BEAR!) Some bear do get lucky and escape the dogs, which happens more then a person thinks.
If a hound here chases deer, I try and correct it (not abusively, mind you anti's that come here looking for trouble.) If that doesn't work, I try to switch the dog to hunt something else, such as coyote or coons...If worst comes to worst and he wont lay off deer, I sell them to hunters who CAN use deer for hounding in other states.

I went on a dog hunt for bear and it was too much for my out of shape body at the time.

Just curios. How is the bear referendum doing in Maine? I haven't heard much and it is only a few weeks away for the vote. It would be a terrible shame if it were to go through.

It's hard to tell, but in the end it looks like the south controls the north...Visit the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife website to read up on it and the anti's campaigns...I believe you can also donate money through the site, or you can get a link to the SAM (Sportsmans Alliance of Maine) website and donate through there also I believe.

I already promised myself if it goes through here I'm moving to NC whenever I can...

1) A recent " Zogby " poll indicated the following.

Voting YES in favor of ban --- 34.5%

Voting N0 opposed to ban ------ 51.8%

Undecided --------------------- 13.7%

Margin of error + - 5%

While the above numbers look promising, it should be noted that most polls usually involve a very small percentage of the people, and it is difficult to say just how accurately a particular poll's results reflect on the views of the overall population.

-----

2) A recent tv ad ( opposed to the ban ) has drawn much outrage from those pushing for the ban.

http://pressherald.mainetoday.com/news/state/040916bearad.shtml

Those pushing for passage of the referendum fear the truth being exposed and have been attempting throughout this campaign to thwart efforts by wildlife officials to expose that truth.

IMO ... If the claims being made for passage of the referendum have validity, then they should be able to withstand any challenge made to such, regardless of who is doing the challenging.
Thank You to all who helped DEFEAT recent referendum attempts by anti hunting factions to threaten wildlife management in Maine and Alaska.

Always remain diligent.

It just depends on how the south votes Tim, most of the north up here (except for the few idiots who support it) are against it, so we have to see how downstate votes and how the ads work....This is like the casino question of last year....WHICH, if you remember, was shot down... :-)

The poll you posted with percents made me feel good......Do you know if it was southerners whor esponded or northerners though? I figure if 90% of people here in the north are agaionst it we can overthrow the south if we get support down there...And why does it sounds like I'm talking about the Civil War?  :)

I am glad that more people are against the ban. I bet a lot more would be if they knew some of the dirtier details of the ban.

I have a friend whom I visited in northern Maine and is active in the fight against it. I did not know that one of the clauses would make it a felony to shoot a bear to protect your property. Only a warden or animal control officer would be allowed to shoot a bear that is threatening you or your property.

I would like to see that brought out in public.
