What 22 to buy?
« on: September 07, 2004, 02:28:34 AM »
For varmint up to a fox but mostly smaller and some target with the family.  Will use the gun as a carry gun in the woods of N. Minnesota for walks and will probably spend a fair amount of time in the truck. So, suggestions on 22HMR or 22 Mag., open sights or scope, and size and manufacture.  I like a bolt with a clip.  I know very little about the difference between the different 22's and really want to do this right the first time.  I don't want to waste money but an extra $100 bucks for a life time of use is OK.  I have a good background with High power but this is new material to me.   Thanks  Buckfever

I have a Marlin 882 SS. This is a plastic stocked stainless metal .22 Magnum. For what you're talking about it would be an ideal gun. Seems I recall picking mine up at Wal-Mart quite a few years back for under $200. Have no clue what they sell for these days.

Unless you shoot iron sights mighty well I'd scope it. Mine wears a Leupold Compact 3-9AO scope. If you're trying to save a bit of money the Bushnell Rimfire 3-9 is a good scope for the money. I have one on my TC Classic. One of these days the two scopes are likely to switch guns.

If they improve the ammo for the 22Mag is that the better choice?

Dunno what you're talking about. Sounds like your a victim of rumors. There is no need to further improve .22 Mag ammo. You have about every possible choice you could ask for already available and some of it will most certainly shoot MOA in your rifle if you and the rifle are up to it.

My cheap Marlin bone stock will shoot five shots into less than an inch at 100 yards all day long using the original Winchester 40 grain JHP. CCI HPs stay under 1.5" but not under an inch. I've honestly never tried any other ammo in it. No need to. Today's .22 Mag ammo is as good as it gets.

Do you mean if they improve the 17hmr ammo???  :?   Like GB said, the 22 mag comes in many different bullet designs, velocities, bullet weights, etc.  From mild to wild.  The 17hmr is pretty restrictive, either ballistic tip HP's that explode or thin JHP's that explode.  They come in varmint bullets only.  Which is great for hunting varmints or paper, but for hunting meat a varmint bullet isn't a good choice.

If they improved the 17hmr to have the ammo diversity the 22 mag does, which would be better?  Hmmmm, I don't know.  I doubt that the 17hmr will ever have the diversity of ammo the 22 mag just because of physics.  The 22 mag has a 20 grain spread with 30 grain bullets up to 50 grain bullets.  The 17hrm would have to have 17grain to 37 grain bullets to have the same 20 grain spread, and I don't think there is enough throat in the chamber or standard magazines for a 37 grain 17 caliber bullet.  And even if they did the 37 grain will never have the smack a 50 grain 22 cal bullet does.

Maybe it's just me, but I look at the 17hmr as a small varmint/target rifle and the 22 mag as a small game and medium varmint rifle, a meat and pelt rifle.  But that's just MHO.

i've got a 10/22 & just picked up a cz 452 varmint. spend the extra $100.00 and be very happy with the cz adjustable trigger, mines down to 1.8 lb. and shoots very small groups @ 50 yards (sub moa) and unlike the ruger it does it day after day and likes a wide range of ammo. i think the ammo savings alone will make up the cost diff. soon.
if its worth doing, finish it!

Hey guys, could you give me a website for these different brands, I'm a sort of new surfer at GBO (started in July this year.)  I am not familiar with the CZs and Marlins; or are they one in the same? I tried a couple of URLs I could think of but no luck.  Really appreciate it. :D   Patriot

Don't forget the Anschutz 1710D .22LR - Very nice rifle. Extremely well made, accurate, light and with a superbly smooth and strong model 54 action.

Albeit a little expensive.

Guess what?  They ARE making better ammo for the .22 WMR as we speak.  And for a really good rifle check out the Ruger 77/22M.  Ruger has about the best scope mounting system going today and the trigger is easy to change to an adjustable one.  Small groups and tight lines to you.  Lawdog
