38-55 Target Model

Does anyone shoot the 38-55?  I keep looking at the pictures of them and feel the urge to own one coming on.  Would like to hear how you like them, loads, etc.  They look so neat.

Nope I don't but I do have a 375 Win.  If I like shooting that I might just forgo my urge to get a 45-70 barrel and get the 38-55 instead.  It's a loaded down 375 basically.  Actually the 375 is more a loaded UP 38-55 since the 38 was here first.

This medium bore thing seems intriguing.

I met a guy who shoots one.  He said it's a helluva shooter.  He was working on some hand loads to make it his veryday hunter.  After talking with him I was considering buying one for myself.  But since I don't handload my choice of ammo is very limited.

There was a good point made.  You have to hand load to take advantage of this caliber.  Factory ammo is scarce.

i have heard there are some throat length problems with that gun. im not sure as i dont own one
i have a cousin who shoots a winchester 94 in 38-55 and it is a tackdriver
he can consistantly bust 12 inch balloons at 400 yards using a marbles tang sight.
he shot a 7 inch group onto steel at 500 yards the other day
so i know the cartridge is capable of fine accuracy

Donaldo, one of my shooting buddies has one, went in to get a Buff Classic and picked this up at the same time. We have not loaded for it yet, but picked up a couple boxes of reloads at the gun show for $9 bucks each.
Since the shells sounded like their was very little powder rattling around  I'd guess they were loaded with unique.

Two shot to zero it at 50 yds, 3 at 100 and after that it was in the black for the rest of the shots. Very accurate, and very comfortable to shoot after the 45-70. I have a 38-55 barrel on my wish list!

I like mine alot, I've not shot it alot but thats because i have so many to shoot and so little time. but it is very accurate and pleasnt to shoot. 8)

In its day, the .38-55 and the .32-40 were the leading 40 rod (220 yards ?) offhand target cartridges. Shooting was done with them that we would be hard put to match today. There is no doubt about the accuracy of the cartridge.

I have been reading posts about the 38-55.  Seems there are not many factory loads, not a problem really as I relaod a lot.  But,...I hate to get into casting bullets, new dies, etc., guess I am getting lazy.  Is there an adequate supply of pre cast bullets available for this caliber?  Not sure I will get one, but just looking at the pics of that long barrel and peep site and hooded front site, makes me think I might be Quigley Down Under.

Do a search on Ebay.  I've found a lot for the 38-55 unfortunately, not any for the 375 Win.

Don't know about quality of those either.

Barnes Original has a 255gr made just for the 38-55 in .375 and .377 dia.  Not to be confused with the .375 of same weight for the 375 WIn.  The cannelure is in different location.

Had my 38-55 target model out shooting for the first time yesterday. Have had it for almost 2 yrs but never messed with it. Its probably one of the most accurate H&Rs I own. Real happy with the way it shoots at 100 yds. The Lyman and Williams sights are great and rifle is fun to shoot. The only thing I did to the rifle was lead the stock in to help balance it out.  I was using winchester factory ammo but at $22 a box if you are going to shoot alot you'll want to reload. HAPPY TRAILS

Darn it guys, why did you have to go and do this to me? I am spending more money than I can afford now and was happy with the calibers of H&R's I had, and now I want a 38-55!!! I guess in the dusty, cobweb covered recesses of what nowadays passes for my mind I always knew I needed one, OK, wanted one. I like the older calibers and especially the .45's and .35's and now this .375 raises it's pretty head!!!

OK, only one more, I promise!!  Now to try to figure out where the money is going to come from..anyone out there have Target Model they want to sell, cheap?? :-D

whats an average and a good price for the target gun and the buffalo classic.  I know the handi/ultras run 200-240 but I never see the others on the shelf or in walmarts catalog.

Local gunshop here has a new 38-55 Target Model for $320.00. Not sure what they get for the 45-70 B.C. Think it was about the same price when I bought mine but that was 2 yrs ago. Back then the B.C. came in a hard case with no sights. I think now sights are included. HAPPY TRAILS

Just what I suspected, buy the whole gun for 285, build it piece by piece for 260 and only have one receiver for more than one barrel.  Now I just need to soften the wife up to another rifle purchase early next year, hot off of the tail of my recent purchase.

Mac, I have not ordered one of those in particular but myself and a couple of hunting buddies did order and did buy several H&R Sportsters through Wal Mart in 2 different states and the process was always the same. Order it and put 50% down, pay the rest when you picked it up. I think they would hold it for you for up to 6 months (or perhaps 90 days after it arrived, but I think it was 6 months). Your deposit was 100 percent refundable for 6 months if you changed your mind at any time prior to picking it up within the 6 months. All sales on firearms through Wal Mart are final, AFTER you pick it up of course. Before that you can back out and get 100% of your money back. I see no reason for it to be any different with the target model...<><.... :grin:

Thanks MSP...I've been eying these Classics for a while...I just might have to  go that route to get one...and the 38-55 would do just nicely...one more thing...do you know if the forearms are the same for the 45-70 as it is for the 38-55?

I don't know if it's true or not, but another poster here stated that Walmart's supplier is Sports South and the inventory on the Internetgun Catalog is what's available to Walmart. FWIW, there are none in stock.

Mac, yes, the forearms are the same, nice checkered American black walnut. I have one on my 7x57 Handi with a Fajen walnut buttstock I purchased partially inletted on e-bay and completed and finished myself. It is a sweet traditional gun.
And for you Quickdtoo, you right about SportsSouth being the H&R supplier for Walmart. I always check availibility on thier internet site BEFORE I go through the gut wrenching process of attempting to order an H&R through Wal-Mart. It saves a lost of wasted time knowing what is available and what the stock number at SpotsSouth is, otherwise most of the time "those people" at Wal-Mart look at you with a vacant stare and say, "we can't get that gun", or even better, "they don't make that gun"....<><.... :?

am I looking in the wrong location, but it looks like the BC is also not available.

Im wondering, I called HR to about ordering a BC barrel and the BC stock and forend to go with it and they said the stocks were not available now.  I wonder if they are even making these models now, waiting for the parts.

I'd go for that line of thought, but I think the .45-70 BC is out of stock, too. All I see is a synthetic stocked handi in .45-70. :cry:
