Reloading 9.3 x 62 ???'s
« on: September 20, 2004, 06:12:29 AM »
I am shooting a 9.3 x 62 and I am FAR from the load data velocities.  It is in a CZ 550 American with a 24" barrel which is the same lenth as Barnes test barrel.

I do not the the exact data in front but for example the book suggests 56gr of h380 and they get 2400fps. I load it and get 2150fps. I know I am not seating the bullet as deep as they suggest but I want my bullet closer to the lands.

I am seat about .200" further out than SAAMI. With all loads, i am 200-300fps short of theirs. I ran Quickload and it is running right with my real world data i.e. it says I should be short in fps. It also says I am way under pressure.

My question is can I bump up my loads and trust Quickload or just deal with being short of fps?  I have been told that velocity is a good measure of pressure.  I have NO visible signs of excessive pressure!!!

More info I am seating to 3.450" and using Lapua brass with Fed 210m primer Barnes 286gr X bullet.

Do I NEED to crimp?  I have never crimped before....if I need to, how is it done???

Thanks,
Kyle

I don't have specific experience with this caliber, but have encountered the same kind of problem with other calibers. The first thing I'd change is the primer to ensure it's the same primer that was specified by the original load data. After that, I'd change the bullet, and finally the powder. I think you should be able to get 2400fps out of it because that's a standard velocity for that cartridge, and you've got a 24" barrel.

Because all this can get pretty expensive, I'd try a box of factory ammo early in the process to see what velocity I'm getting with factory ammo.  Grafs sells some mail-order:

Before second-guessing the load data, I'd second guess my chronograph.

guessing pressures
« Reply #3 on: September 20, 2004, 10:38:32 PM »
for all the guys trying to guesstimate pressures of their loads, you ought to read John Barsness' chamber pressure article in Handloader 39-3 (June-July???).   It sure opened up my eyes.

Among other things this article woke me up to the effects of primers - specifically F215 vs Win Large Rifle Magnums - the very problem I was experiencing in my 300 win mag.

This also supports Questor's suggestion to use the specified primers.

I think Ken Waters Pet Loads had a piece on the 9.3 x 62 - you might want to check it out for more data and info.

What was the difference between the Federal 215s and Winchester Large Rifle in that article?

I have copied their loads on everything but case and seating depth.

They use a norma case, I use Lapua.....they seat at 3.290"....I seat at 3.450"

After looking at different manuals, there is A LOT of variation from manual to maual.

One publication calls for 60grains for a load and another manual calls for 67gr fir the exact same bullet, case, powder, primer, and seating depth.  This has me baffled!!!!!!

pressures

To quote Barsness in the June July 04 Handloader Magazine: 300 win magnum 23 in barrel, 75 gr H4831 180 bullet:

Fed 215 primer vel 2,964, pressure 63,800 psi
CC1 BR2    2920   55,800 psi
WLRM      2,991 70,100 psi

pressures were gauged with a strain gauge system on chamber area of barrel.

From all my reading I expected the Fed to be hotter than the Win Large Rifle Magnum.  I was using IMR 4831 but wondering why I had to drop from my customary 72.5 to 73 grs.   I had newer slightly heavier (thicker) cases too but had tried to compensate by dropping .5 gr powder but was still seeing degraded accuracy and pressure signs with the WLRM primer loads.

Rereading the article he lists some loads with the 9.3x62!! to quote again:

286 Nosler Part, 65 gr Ramshot CCI 200  - 2,463 fps  49,500 psi
250 Barnes X,  62-64  gr Alliant RL 15,   Primer???  ~ 2,593fps 47,700 psi
250 Nos Ballistic tip, 62-64 RL 15, primer??  2,662 fps 48,400 psi

no case make listed - work up to these in your gun and be careful.

You might be able to access these loads  and this article and more by going to Wolfe Publishing's website.

Redman,
By seating your bullets farther out, you have increased your case capacity which will lower your pressure and velocity.  You might try seating your bullet to the recommend cartridge overall length and see if your velocity doesn't increase.  Seating the bullets closer to the lands doesn't always provide better accuracy.  You might find that your rifle shoots as accurately or better with the bullet seated deeper as it does with the bullet seated further out.

I found some more info and I matched the velocity of that load yesterday with the load they suggested and got 1" groups with a 4x Leupold scope.

Getting 2,350avg at 20' from the muzzle.

I still cannot believe the variation in data for this cartridge!!!

I think this load will do everything I want 200yds and closer.

Thanks,
Kyle

For what it's worth I've never been able to match the velocities from the Barnes manual on anything I've ever used. Dunno what's going on with them but if you'll look their data over and compare it to most any other manual with same weight bullets you'll find the Barnes data way higher than the rest of them. Makes one wonder.

Gray,

you are correct.....they are higher per bullet weight on all loads.

What had me baffled was I was 200-300fps behing some of the other books loads.  I knew there was a variation for case capacity and my seating depth but I failed to realize just how much difference there would be.  Also after looking the barrel over, there are only 4 grooves....that may contribute to lower pressure and velocity.
