Why would you even think of leaving our patch of Heaven? There is a really good population of hogs in the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and at False Cape State Park. The cost of registering for the hunt at Back Bay is $5, which gets you into a lottery. If you are not drawn, you can still hunt standby, and usually, after Wednesday, there are more spaces than hunters. Here is the url for Back Bay:http://backbay.fws.gov/hunting.htm
False Cape is more of the same. The last time I went down, there were more hogs killed at False Cape than Back Bay. False Cape is the least used state park in Virginia. Here is the url for False Cape State Park:http://www.dcr.state.va.us/parks/falscape.htm. The hunts are shotgun only, 20 gauge minimum. Word of warning: There are a lot of wild horses at both parks, and all I have seen were dark. I have driven by them early in the morning and not realized that they were there until I was past them. Hitting one would really put a crimp in to a hunting trip, not to mention your vehicle.
Good luck and good hunting.
