1895 in 45-70

I finally got back to the range today with my 1895 in 45-70.

I had bought it a few months ago and I had put 100 rounds or so through it with the stock sights. I didn't much care for the rear buckhorn sight and had a hard time grouping with it. **One thing to note. The range that I shoot at will not let you shoot any center fire rifles at a distance of less than 100 yds. That's a fer piece for a guy used to scopes.

And, I promised myself that I would not scope this rifle.

I bought a Williams FP Receiver sight and mounted it with the original front sight. What a huge difference it made for me. I was shooting the remington 300gr HP ammo and got decent groups from it. I can tell as I get used to this rifle that its going to be a shooter. Its gonna take some practice on my part!!

I think I'd like to get the Williams Fire Sight Bead for the front sight as I had trouble seeing the stock Marlin white bead. Does anyone have any experience with these?

I've also purchased the Reloading dies & such to start to reload for this gun. I'm going to use the Sierra 350 gr JHPs and RE7 to start. I'm looking for an accurate Whitetail round for the CT brush. I may also take it to Texas this Thanksgiving and hunt Hogs with it. I put up a new feeder there in April and the shots from my stand will be up to 80 yds.

i kept the original front sight on mine.   I did that because at 100
yards, using the williams peep on my 336 A,  the Firesight bead
up front takes up the whole target area that I shoot.    I have
shot  300 grn Hps thru mine  read in the Lyman manual that lots
of times  350 grn or  bigger fly better in the 45-70  in  my 1895CB
Marlin it proved true,   I'm putting 4 in a beer can bottom at 100 yds

Hornady 350 grn  FN,       52 grns         IMR  3031
not that violent at all,  will take  anything in Wa state at out to 150 yds.
30-30....45/70...... does anything else matter?

I didn't know sierra came out with a 350gr.Are you sure it isn't a 300gr hp?
Try these loads with the 300gr hp,just reduce load by 8% and work up when changing components.

I have the Williams Fire sights on most of my lever guns. I think the fire sight is a little finer than the factory bead. Much easer to see. I had called Williams and had then put a green bead in place of the red one. the green can be seen better in low light.

When I purchased my 1895ss I told myself I was'nt going to put a scope on it. But dang thing shot so well with factory sites I had to try a scope.
It shoots pretty little 1 inch groups so the scopes still there and there it will stay.  :-) Even though the scope uglied up the looks of the rifle like a prom queen in coveralls.

Riflemans, Your correct, my error, Sierra 300gr is what I purchased...thx

Snowdog, I'm using the square Shoot-n-See target (probably 8x10") @ 100yds and my factory front bead completely blocks it out. That is the main reason I'm considering the fire sight.

Those that have the Williams front bead, did you purchase the .290 Height, .340 Width bead (same as stock size)?

I like the green bead idea...just order from Williams direct?

Thanks y'all
