just got my 1895. looking for a receiver sight, something other than a ghost ring.
gun currently shoots 1" groups at 100yds with the semi-buckhorn rear sight. I would like to try a peep of some kind your thoughts would be appres

ashley,
If you decide on a scope, make it one with looooong eye relief. They also make a better recoil pad should you want one. I think the 1895 in 45-70 is one of the best medium range rifles that was ever produced.

I did put a limbsaver from sim's on my 1895 c.b. and it has helped with felt recoil. those loads that got such good results were with 405gr. LBT WFNGC in front of 50.6 gr.s of imr 3031. these shot well and the limbsaver took all the ouch out. will use this for elk this fall. would like to stay with iron sights. I'll be hunting the west slopes of WA. where visibility is limited.

I have a leupold 2.5x compact in warne mounts on my marlin 1895 45/70 & I feel it is the ideal set up for a 45/70...heaps of eye releif and plenty of magnification for any application you might have for a lvere 45/70. Also there near in-destructable.

I'm trying to get an older Weaver in a low power for mine. I have been using a past recoil pad for the range. I am shooting 300 gr sierra's with (I believe) 50 gr of 4198 and the rifle is placing them in one big hole at 100 yds. I took a small elk with this load 3 years ago.

I have the ghost ring on mine with the thread post for Williams apetures. I like it better than a tang sight on the marlin because the tang sight will knock your eye out with stout loads. The ghost ring is out of the way and once youv'e got it set for a particular load it stays there, it's neat and out of the way, and give you a very long sight radius, but it' like any thing else , if you don't like them there isn't much you can do about that.

I managed to find a 2x20 weaver scope for my guide. It has a post .
I really like the set up for woods style shooting. The scope is not wider than the receiver and have enough eye relief.
I am using 300 Sierra's on top of 55 gr.s of H 4198 and learned to roll with the recoil.
One thing The Lever would take a bite on my middle finger so I wrapped the area with a piece of leather lace from behind the trigger to the end of the curve. That solved that .
Last years deer went down , never felt a thing with this set up.

WoW! My Sierra book shows 51.8 grains as max. I would imagine that you would roll with the pull. You got a great deal with the scope. The German Post is hard to find. I had one with a variable power and a German Post but was stupid enough to leave it on a rifle I sold. Now a friend of mine is making great use of it.

I put a lyman 66la peep sight on the receiver and a hi vizz on the front and it works real good, also pachmyer recoil pad to slow the thing down a little. works good for me. Good luck........Joe.........

Gallatin, I put a lyman 66 on my 1895ss and I have no complaints about it at all I just recently finished my first serious sighting sesion and though I wasn't happy with my hand loads I did sink 6 out of 8 REM. factory 405 grainers into a 2 1/2" group at 105 yds and I believe with the right hand loads I can do better than that . that was also with the factory bead ,if I installed one of them glowy new fangled front posts it would help but dang it I hate stickin any of that foofaraw on my rifles cause the old timers didn't and they used them posts to stay alive.shootrj

gallatin, I installed a Lyman 66 on my 1895ss and it's capable of 2 1/2 " groups with factory Remington 405 gr.. FN and as soon as I work up a hand load that it likes I have every reason to believe it will do even better than that. Except for the rare odd shot where I hunt around here 200 yds. is the outer limits of shots and 90 percent of my shots have been well within 70 yds. on whitetails and most bears are probably about the same the tallest mountain in my area is about 4000 ft. most are lower and very rocky and they tend to be covered with brush and trees all the way up[mixed hardwoods and conifers]the bottoms tend to be swampy so a long range set-up is not needed and a peep is about as quick as you can get and less prone to damage. :wink: shootrj

I bought my 1895G in the fall of 1998 when they first came out. I was told that shotgun scopes were popular on .45-70's in Alaska just for the recoil. I don't know if that was true or not but it made sense to me. I mounted a Simmons 1.5-5x20 on her and it has performed flawlessly for every hunt.

PC: that's the same scope an base I have mounted, except I have heavy Duplex reticle on my 1895. Also I am reloading 50.0 3031/405gr Rem Bulk JSP/Federal 215 primers.
which Simms pad did you buy to fit your 1895? And how was the fit? Did you need to sand it for a good fit or not.
I was thinking about the slip on recoil pad. That way I could use it on my 10 ga. turkey shotgun too.

If you can shoot a 1" group @ 100 yds with the factory semi-buckhorn sights, you may find that a receiver sight may not help you any. It sounds like you have squeezed just about everything you could out of your 1895. Many can't do that well with a scoped lever gun.

I am sorry to say that I can't lay my hands or the package that the limbsaver came in.
I bought it from cabella's and did not like it's at all, so I gave marcy a call at sims and sent the pad and the black plastic pad from the end of my rifle to her.what she sent back fits well,it isn't a perfect fit about a 1/16" small but fine none the less. I'm not looking to shoot better than at present but would like a more rapid sight picture.

Just curious, what load are you shooting in your 45/70 lever gun? Is it a handload or a factory cartridge? Cast or jacketed bullet. :shock:

that load was Cast Performance out of riverton. WY their lbt style wfn 405gr. in front of 50.6 gr. of IMR3031 should be just under 40k PSI

Actually the 5th edition Sierra book list 54.3 as their max load and the latest Hodgdons Annual manual list 60 grains for their max loading in the 1895 action...different primers and different brass for both loadings with the Sierra 300 grain HP....Seirra shows 50 grains of IMR 4198 as a max loading...

the heavy duplex would be great for the 45/70 I also reckon the German post would be ideal as well, I wish leupold offered that as standard actually.

OPPs!

You will probably know that H 4198 and IMR 4198 are quite different powders as with the 4350 with the two Companies.
Primers can make a differance too as pressure generated by one gun to the other.
Start at least 10 % lower and work up

My loading was passed on to be by Jackfish which by the way I found to work very well on a white tale deer and on paper to one hundred yards.
Oh ! you are wise to check any loads given with your manuals making sire that there are no typo's mistakes with powder companies and the like.
I start a bit low and work up to find what works in your gun, and maybe too , Ask Jackfish what works for him.

I installed a Williams FP receiver peep sight on my 1895SS. It sure did help me in the accuarcy department. With the receiver peep sight I can hit targets that I couldn't hit before.

Here's my Marlin before the peep sights were installed.

The only way I can shoot one inch groups at 100 yards with open sights is to shoot a one shot group.

Put a Leupold 1.75 X 6 X 32mm on my 1895. My old eyes can't see the bulls-eye at 100 yards without it! The limbsaver recoil pad made a huge difference, and I have added them to most of my rifles. PMC 350 gn. HA, or +P+ shoots just over an inch at a hundred, but the recoil is much greater than the 405 gn remingtons......
