Glocks for bikers 27,30 or 23?
« on: September 27, 2004, 08:23:13 AM »
Hi there everyone! New guy here. In a couple weeks I'll be taking my CCW classes here in Ohio and I have a few Glock questions I hope you fellows can help me with. I am interested in the 27, 30, or 23. My hands are not large, I'm a biker and plan to carry on the bike. I would like this piece to be comfortable and fun to shoot at the range not just a powerhouse of stopping power when I need it in a emergency, heaven forbid. I currently own a Tanfoglio Combat 9mm so I'm accustomed that cal. but for CCW I feel better with .40 or .45cal. I know the dimensions of these pistols and I was wondering in actuality if the slight difference in size is significant enough.

So size is important for carrying on motorcycle yet I want comfort and shooting pleasure at the range as well. I have yet to stop at the store to check these pieces out. Any recommendations or comments I'd appreciate.

I personally don't care for the Glock 26/27 size. I am especially fond of the mdls 19/23 size Glocks. I think either the 23 or the 30 would serve you well as an all around pistol.

I had a 26 but was not comfortable with it.  I have a 19 and a 30 now.  I like them both.  How will you carry this gun?  If on your person and you are biking ( I presume the human powered species of bike), you may want to opt for a Smith Titanium airweight 38 special.  The titanium is just as resisent if not more to sweat (persperation) as the glock tenifer (sp?) finish and the gun is a lot lighter.  Do not let anyone tell you that you will not be able to hit with it, if such a gun becomes a candidate, it does recoil some and I do not use +P ammunition (which you can with the gun). No Jimmyp50, the 1800cc powered species of bike. I do travel from state to state and I also pickup my daughter from downtown Cleveland and would like some reassurance when I'm totally exposed on my motorcycle.

I am starting to lean towards the compact 30 & 23 models rather than the subcompact yet I'm not quite sure if the compact are too large to pack with me while riding. I suppose with the amount of holsters out there I could carry practically any size for that matter. I would really like to hear from some fellow bikers what Glock they are carrying. Thanks fellas.

possibly interested in a 36?

Riffster, have you tried the 36?  If you have smaller hands, then the slimmer grip profile of the 36 seems like more your style.  For your info the 36 grip is almost identical to a "compact" Gov't size grip.  And to make the rest of this package "better", the whole gun is slimmer than any other Glock.

Anyway, this is the only Glock that I found that I could LOVE the first time I picked it up.  And now, it has logged about as many miles on my scooter as I have.

As far as shooting the .45, this one is no problem.........I have had 9's that had a more "uncomfortable" recoil.  For the record, I actually prefer to shoot the 36 over my 1991A1 fullsize.

The best thing to do (in a perfect world)  would be to find one of each model that you're looking at and shoot them.

A shoulder holster or OWB is the most comfortable for me on the bike.

I personally prefer the Glock 27 for covered carry. I also own the Glock 22 and 23 . My Glock 27 goes almost every where with me when I am not on duty. The Glock 27 - being in the 40 caliber is amazingly accurate and controllable. Has a 10 round magazine and the magazines from the Glock 22 and 23 will work great in it. Its small enough for a pocket or ankle holster and to me is the ideal back up weapon. As stated by Glock - "The Glock 27 is the "thinking person's" deep concealment weapon.  The other advantage to the Glock 27 is the ability to get an extension for it to fit on a Glock 22 magazine. This makes the weapon look like a Glock 22 with a shorter barrel. Now we have two weapons in one.

G 27 mag extension

Coyote 2, Can you tell me a little more about the g22 extension you mentioned? I had a 27 but sold it because the grip was to short. I like the shorter barrel and would get one in a heart beat if i could extend the grip a little like the one in your picture.

http://www.glockmeister.com/ is the location where I purchased my extension. You have to sand a little off the back - very little - to make a tight fit. The extension just make the little 27 feel like a Glock 22 but with the ability to change back to the 27 mode. They just slip over the magazine and then tighten with a little allen screw. Mine have been to the range and through tactical training with no failure at all. They make some for the 23 if I am not mistaken. Anyhow - try the above web site and you can read all about them.
They are a keeper.

I carry a 23 with me everywhere I ride,it went to Sturgis with me in August and so far has been remarkably well behaved.Maybe it just likes Beemers.
Turned the stone and looked beneath it.

Thanks everyone for your help, especially the bikers who chimed in.

I got to handle the 23 the other day and it felt great however I'm starting to think that what I originally thought would be better, the 27. The super compact size seems ideal for my use and with the added after market extentions I think it will be enjoyable to shoot at the range - thanks Coyote and everyone.
