45 Colt/410 question
« on: October 01, 2004, 07:58:46 PM »
Any idea why a 45 Colt barrel that is threaded for a choke would not fire a 410 round?  The barrel is 10" ported octagon version.  It seems to me that if it's THREADED and accepts a choke, it should be the combo.

A side question: Can a ported barrel shoot small shot??  Does the choke cover the ports from the inside as well as the threads??

Thanks in advance for your help!

Terry

I don't remember all the particulars, but this is what I think you have. Some years ago, there were some legal issues with the 45-410 barrels. (considered same as sawed off shot guns) Untill it got sorted out, the BATF made TC quit producing the barrels. What TC did produce instead (which the BATF) didnt have a problem with), was a barrel that chambered and fired a round loaded with a shot capsule. The screw in "choke", was more a device to "crack" the capsule, so the shot could escape.
I'm not sure with out lookin at it, but this is what it sounds like to me. The good news is,some day it might have some collector value. Also there are shot capsules available for reloading.
Bad news is, the capsules outa 10" barrel  are basically worthless in the field. Except for maybe snakes. And from what I heard, they (capsules) were notorious for not opening. So they ain't reliable for snakes either.

Try 2 1/4" shells if you haven't already. My hot shot (external choke ported) barrel shot these without any problem.

I assume that you really mean the barrel will not chamber a .410 shell.  If that is the case then either of the above replys could apply.  If it does not fire the shell then the rim headspace may be incorrect, allowing the interlock safety to block the firing pin.
