Author Topic: Decision time on new muzzleloader (Read 784 times)

Ready to buy my first muzzleloader. I have read many posts and reviews on the Internet so I have narrowed it down and focused on what I saw as good bargains. Was planning on hunting deer, hog and varmits with iron sights with maximum range maybe 100 -125 yds. Use it during gun season. Probably won't shoot it much except a bunch before hunting season as I have to drive over 1 hour to a shooting range. I do value accuracy above all else but economy is important. Choices that I came up with are:

Huntsman blued/wood - $128 at walmart.

Knight Wolverine 209 Camo/SS -$199 at Bass Pro Shops -

Knight Disc stainless/black synthetic 24". -$299 (not a Disc Elite)

SideKick 26" blued/wood - $141 at Dallac Tactical

I was thinking of maybe buying the Huntsman as the first muzzleloader. Fit was great although not as good as the Knight Disc. I liked the Huntsman fit better than the Sidekick. Seemed more solid and better sight picture. I did try them out on different days so maybe just my imagination. Did not like the stock on the stainless Huntsman or Sidekick. The Knight Disc did feel the best but $ may be too much. Wolverine felt lkke a Junior Knight but it was not a fair comparison. What I have read I should be able to shoot 1-1/2" to 2" groups at 100 yds with work and proper load in Huntsman. If I really like Muzzleloading, then get a top of the line Knight, T&C or possibly a traditional muzzleloader. Please give me your opinions. This is the only gun purchase I will get this year from my wife. The next gun purchase has to look like a couch.

Have you checked you state laws to make sure the rifle you pick is legal? Some states have requirements as to 209 primer, closed breech, shooting anything other than conicals etc. If all the choices you picked are legal I guess you will have to rely on what feels good and if you are going to stay with stock sights that would be a decision maker also. I have a T/C Omega (out of your price range) and a Traditions Pursuit LT which is in the range but many have terrible triggers and mine did. I personally would not recommend it unless you get to check the trigger and like it. Mine has shot one inch groups at 50 yards but so far the 100 yard groups are over two inches and thats with a scope. I have not shot it a lot. The Omega shoots less than one inch at 100 yards when it and I feel good.

You have got a list of 4 good muzzleloaders, in the low end of the price scale.
Get the Sidekick.

Thanks for the replys. I bought the Huntsman from a gun dealer. In the end, it was really what I could afford. Really liked the fit. Just could not leave the gun dealer without it. Only Sidekick I got to handle was a stainless and I did not like it or the stainless Huntsman. May have went for the blued Sidekick if they had it. I may get a 28 gauge shotgun barrel for it later. If I take to Muzzleloading and go scoped, my heart is set on a Knight Disc Elite. Thanks again

You made a good choice.
You can't go wrong with that Knight Disc Elite. They are accurate as hell.
One of the great inlines.

You could look at the .45 wolverine from natchez supply for 139 for the blue and 169 for stainless. www.natchezss.com . They wolverine should be a vey good or excellent gun for that money, but it does not have open sights, so you would need a scope, rings, and a base for it. Cabelas bargain cave also had the traiditonal Hawkens NIB for 189.00. They have the wolverine .50 for 202.00 NIB.
