Restoring a stock's finish...
« on: October 03, 2004, 12:18:16 PM »
I have a Win. 75 in very good cond. except the stock finish has dulled. I want to "clean it up" a bit, without stripping and refinishing. Any ideas?

If the pores are still filled and it's just dulled a bit then all it needs is a cleaaning and a little maintenance.  Remove the metal from the stock(inckluding barrel bands) and wipe the stock down with a rag(or paper towel) moistened with mineral spirits.  This will clean the finish, removing hand oils and crud.  Then apply a couple of drops or TruOil and rub into the wood.  Use just enough oil to allow the hand to slide, but leaave no appreciable buildup.  It should just make the wood shiney, no more!  This can be repeated until the finish is nice and even.  Allow enough time between coats for the oikl to completely harden.  I can sometimes get 2 coats a day here in Missouri but sometimes only 1 if the humidity is really high..  When the finish looks done you can either leave it alone or do as Winchester did origially, lightly steel wool(0000 grade) and apply a nice carnuba type wax..  buffed by hand..  renew the wax as it wears away and the finish will last forever.

Tnx, G-nut,
just the kind of info i was looking for. I'm treating this 75 sporter like a museum piece (except that I plan to shoot and hunt the heck out of it).

I don't want to do anything that can't be reversed.

tnx again.

I love the old winchesters and the 75's are really great examples..  I've a 75 sporter that I'm planning a little rejuvenation on and then it will help with my own little attack on the local squirrel population.  good luck!
