« on: October 02, 2004, 02:44:25 PM »
These seem to be in my budget.....i have haerd the marlin has excellant accuracy which I am after, I also like it because it can chamber shorts, longs, and long rifle.........i think it cost $135 and i have heard very good reports from them......my other option is a Remington 597 which would probably be the LS HB version........another option would be a savage........any thoughts?? (It will be used for hunting)!!

Thanx

Goose - get the Marlin - foolproof, will shoot shorts and longs, won't jam.... (isn't about time you bought something? with all the time you've spent on the net, you could have gotten a second job and bought a Kimber or something!)) good accuracy, reliable, trigger can be fixed....

Goose7856,

If I was you I would get the Marlin 981T. Very good rifle for the money in my opinion. I have always liked tube fed bolt action rifles...

You are not planning on putting a scope worthy of moon viewing on it, are you???  :)  :-D

Semper Fi,  Goose is a young man with plenty of time on his hands.  I think a first job might be more likely.  One of my favorite bible passages "Oh young man rejoice in thy youth."  God knows I rejoiced enough when I was younger......Goose, hang in there buddy, I enjoy reading your post!

I agree with the Marlin tube fed bolt gun as well.

Nothing like shooting shorts for bushy tails.

I have heard many people say that shorts are a very good round for bushy tails......why does everyone say this.....is it because they are very quiet, but still have enough "umph" to kill them......or is their another reason.......how do they compare to .22lr subsonics?? I think i will def. go with the marlin 981t.......it has everything i would ever want......thats why it caught my attention the first time I saw it.........hmmm now lets see how long it takes for me to get the gun......ive got about $50, and will have another $50 soon because i am selling something on ebay for my dad's friends.......then my b-day, so by deer hunting season I should be able to get it........what kind of accuracy are yall getting at 50 and 100 yards?? (fartherest shot would probably be 75)........if i have the extra money, would it be worth getting a CZ?? I have heard that almost nothing compares in accuracy.......or should I just by a better scope..........i really like the Swift 4-12x40 AO, but idk if it would be too "big" for the gun??

Short hollow points are plenty strong for bushy tails. If I were planning on 75 yard shots I would go with 22lr’s. Most of my squirrel hunting is inside of 40 yards. When you are hunting close quarters like that the 22short doesn’t startle the squirrels near as bad. If you are hunting big woods where you can cover a lot of territory there is nothing wrong with lr’s. I was raised hunting on 10 and 20 acre chunks of land where I didn’t have a lot of roaming room. The shorts are better for that I believe. I use to hunt the Mississippi Delta for black and red squirrels, amazing woods. The trees are so tall there you can be at the base of one tree and have 50 yard shot strait up. Red and Black squirrels are much bigger than the grey squirrels. I felt the lr was better for the circumstances.

If you are going to use an AO type of scope you want to make sure the parallax adjustment is able to be set at a minimum of 25 yards. Parallax may not seem like a big deal to most people but a half inch difference in bullet placement is a huge miss on something as small as a squirrel. I use a Leupold AO 3x9x33 EFR. I think this scope cost bout 250 bucks.

Good luck and Be Safe,
Scott

so that rules out my choices before since they dont have an AO.........OK 7 mag, I am really sorry for this option, but it seems like it would fit my budget the best, and I have heard very good things about this scope........it is the Simmons ATV 4.5-14x40 AO........The mag. is a little much, but 4.5 on the low end isn't too bad.....I gound the AO feature, and they seem to sell cheap on ebay right now.....how would this fit........i am SERIOUSLY thinking of getting one b/c they sell so cheap, and weight really isint an issue.......this .22 WILL NOT BE USED FOR THE NORMAL PURPOSES........well let me re-phrase that........i want it so I can bring it to my deer stand, and snipe squirels and rabbits while in the stand, so the weight really doesnt matter to me........as long as it would fit the gun I am fine with it.......the extra mag will just make me more comfortable, although i will almost never use it (haha u have changed some of my opnion on the high mag 7mag, but not all of it!!).......so for all of you who have the 981t, would this scope be a good chpice for me since it will be used when i am still hunting?? THANX and i hope to hear from you soon (the auction ends in about a day!!)

Goose:  Don't be to quick to want to work....once you start, it's very hard to stop......I started at 14 and been working ever sense.  Enjoy the 3 or so years before you have to start buckling down, hunt, fish, do what ever your hearts content.  At my age, life doesn't slow down, and time is something I never seem to have enough of.
