so who shoots a bushmaster varminter?

i bought one on an auction site and am waiting for its arrival.   the wait is killing me.  can i expect accuracy to be what folks claim?   what are your guy's experiences?

I don't have a Varminter, but I do have a "plain jane" Bushmaster A-2 that is very accurate for what it is. I can fairly reasily bust groundhogs out to around 200 yards or farther with Silver Bear 62g HPs. The only thing I've done to mine is a trigger job, and turned the front post down to a finer point.

There's no doubt in my mind that if this rifle wore a scope, it would be capable of some pretty decent groups with tailored handloads.

I can't imagine a heavier Bushmaster, with a better barrel not shooting at least a little better, if not a great deal better than mine.

Mine will shoot XM193 ammo into <1.5" at 200 meters and the 55 Horn Vmax in a handload into <0.6" at 100 meters.
All this wearing a Tasco 3-9X scope.

I have a Varmint Special... 24" Stainless barrel.  Shooting Winchester 45gr varmint bullets (40 round "value packs) I get sub 1" 5 shot groups with 3 of the 5 typically touching.  Try and get a scope with minimal eye relief.  I changed out my leupold 4x12 for a nikon 3.3-10x44 which I mounted with Leupold Rifleman see-thru mounts w/o the riser blocks.  Much more comfortable now.  I love it !!!

Good advice Lou.  I'm using the riser blocks and offset Weaver rings to get the scope moved forward enough for comfort.

thanks for the advice, guys.  i looked at scopes today and the guy i like to go through got all funny on me.  i guess he is upset i got the gun coming from someone other than him.   nevermind the fact that he is closed 3 days out of the week and didnt have time to give me prices the 4 times i went in.      so he hands me a leupold and doesnt even want to let me look and anything else.  looks like me and him are parting company for keeps.   i like nikon scopes, and after reading the advice i think i will be patronizing one of the g.b.o. sponsers about one.   one more question, the rail on this take weaver style base rings?

I got my Monarch 3.3-10x44 from The Optic Zone.  It goes great with my gun.  They had the best price anywhere, didn't charge for shipping, and it arrived the next day after I ordered it !!!  I still can't figure out how they did it....    The bushmaster does use weaver style rail bases, and you're gonna want high rings.  Take a look at the Leupold Rifleman see-through's.  They were cheap, but the fit is fine (they can be mounted so they "lean" forward, helping with the eye relief and you won't need the risers) and look pretty good as well.

I can't speak about others from experience, but I've happily used SWFA a couple of times.  Good selection & good prices (I thought). If in doubt about compatibility, also check Bushmaster's web site for mounts & other accessories.

thanks guys.  the suspense was killing me so i picked up a nikon 3-9/ 40 and mounted it up with some leupold rings.   took it out and with cheap fmj ammo i am burning off to get the brass (winchester) i printed several dime sized groups @ 100 yards.  i am happy; but i cant wait to see what it will do with some of the other bullets i have lined up to feed it.  plus i have to get used to the gun a little more.  i look to shink those groups by half.  i am confident i can.  
    i plan on getting a scope more suited to this gun down the road.  i want to do a bit more research first.  thanks  a bunch to those of you who offered the advise on the scope and how to set up the rings.  you guys are tops.
